Our love story up to now

Once upon a time in the whimsical world of Humboldt County, California—where the trees are taller than the average hipster’s top knot and the fog rolls in like an overzealous party guest—two unsuspecting apartment neighbors were fated to collide. It was June 18th, 2017, and Danielle was busy making a name for herself as the loudest upstairs neighbor possible, probably hosting an impromptu concert for an audience of one (her own reflection), or maybe just binge-watching the latest season of HGTV’s Renovation Brothers while attempting to recreate a brand new dresser. Who knew that her enthusiastic yet highly unskilled DIY antics would soon catch the attention of the charming guy living below...Not her.

Downstairs, he was summer ball player with the Humboldt Crabs, blissfully unaware that his next great adventure was just a floor above. While he was perfecting rap battle techniques with his teammates and talking about who blew it in the game, he often found himself wondering what on earth that ruckus was coming from upstairs (Trust me, she knew, she could hear it through the vent in the floor). After hearing such discussions, she decided to approach the handsome new downstairs tenant and introduce herself, as well as let him know that if he needed to barrow anything, or needed info about the area, she and her insanely loud footsteps were happy to welcome him in and help him out. He was intrigued. Intrigued enough to employ the classic strategy of borrowing random items to strike up a conversation. “Hey, can I borrow your vacuum?” became his not-so-subtle code for, “I’d like to know more about her". She quickly caught onto his game and played along, thinking, “Well, if he’s going to borrow my vacuum, he might as well borrow my heart too.” This soon turned into quick chats in the tiny kitchen over beers discovering where they were from, how they grew up, and their backstories.

Fast forward to August 1st, 2017, they both finally decided to take the plunge into dating. While she was excited, and happy, and filled with butterflies, he had just left Humboldt to resume his life back in Sacramento. And then came the reality check: long-distance living was about to become their new normal. For a year, they each navigated the excitement of a new relationship, balancing their busy lives while counting down the days to see each other. They quickly became experts in the fine art of FaceTiming and texting without looking while in class, just like they did in their adolescent days. We made it through, being there for each other on the hard days, celebrating each others wins from afar, and never giving up on this new found happiness they both found in each other. They both graduated, and then decided to take their next big step. Adopting their first son.

In July 2018, Draco came bounding into their lives, immediately claiming the title of “CSS- Chief Sock Stealer.” They took their trial run at being coparents from afar when they decided to take yet the next step in their relationship, move in together. Danielle had scored a job at Stanford University and so it was then that they chose to move in to their first one bedroom in the Silicon Valley. Here, they both dove headfirst into adulthood, complete with a hefty price tag. They quickly realized that living in the Bay Area was like trying to find a parking spot at Disneyland on a Saturday in the beginning of Summer – stressful, expensive, and rife with unexpected twists. But through it all, their love bloomed, fueled by takeout dinners and the occasional spontaneous card game duel in the living room.

Fast forward again to July 2022, when they welcomed another furball into their family, Rigley, who somehow managed to be both a cuddly teddy bear and a tornado of chaos (he still is if we are being honest…iykyk). This just two days after discovering they were pregnant with their first son. Talk about timing! Their household quickly became a chaotic yet lovable circus, with two dogs and a baby on the way. (Life protip: don’t get a puppy if you have severe morning sickness, or if you do, your significant other will be in charge of bathroom duty).

Then came the grand adventure of childbirth. On April 7th, 2023, after 14 hours of labor, Danielle and Devin welcomed their beautiful son, Camden William, into the world. If labor were an Olympic sport, they would have taken home the gold medal for sheer endurance, support, and determination! As they held their little bundle of joy, they couldn’t help but marvel at how far they had come—from two apartment neighbors to a family of three (plus two furry companions).

Finally, in November 2024, Devin decided to make it official and proposed, as if the universe had scripted the moment just for the two of them. You could almost hear Draco and Rigley barking with approval from afar as Danielle said yes and Camden handed over the engagement ring, sealing the deal on their beautiful love story.

Through job losses and reemployment, pandemic-induced chaos, and enough moves to qualify them as professional nomads, their love remained unshakeable. They both navigated life’s challenges with humor, turning every obstacle into a hilarious story to share later, often while wrangling the dogs or debating whose turn it was to change a diaper.

And so, from two apartment neighbors to a family of three with a couple of golden retrievers as their trusty sidekicks, it’s a tale filled with humor, love, and the kind of wit that turns life’s challenges into joyful memories. Here’s to many more adventures ahead, proving that the best journeys are the ones taken together, with laughter and a little bit of chaos along the way!
