Q + A

What does the sacrament of marriage signify in the Catholic Church?

In the Catholic Church, marriage is one of the seven sacraments, which are special signs through which God gives us grace. The sacrament of marriage is when a man and a woman freely choose to give their whole lives to each other in love, in front of God and the Church. It’s a way of saying, “We’re not just doing this on our own—we want God to be at the center of our relationship.” Through this sacrament, God gives the couple strength, grace, and guidance to live out their promises to love, be faithful, and stay together for life. Marriage in the Church also reflects the deep love between Christ and the Church—a love that’s faithful, sacrificial, and forever. So it’s not just about the couple- it’s a vocation and a witness to the world of what God’s love looks like: faithful, sacrificial, and enduring.
