The Malloure's cottage is located on the green shores of Walloon Lake, a breathtaking glacier-formed lake, less than 1 miles from Lake Michigan. It is one of the state's cleanest lakes with a maximum depth is just over 100 feet. The outline of Walloon Lake is very irregular and it's shoreline measures approx. 30 miles long, 9 miles in length, and covers 4320 acres. Ernest Hemingway spent 18 summers on Walloon, at his family cottage called the Windermere. Nearby is the historic town of Petoskey located on the shores of Lake Michigan's beautiful Little Traverse Bay in northwest lower Michigan. It is known for its rest air, spectacular beauty, and the Michigan's state stone, the Petoskey Stone. Smithsonian Magazine names Petoskey among the best Small Towns to Visit in 2013. Also within 30 minutes are the towns of Harbor Springs and Charlevoix. Approx. 1 hour away in the Mackinaw Bridge to Michigan's Upper Peninsula and where you catch a ferry to Mackinaw Island. Walloon Lake is the most beautiful lake year round but especially in the summer! You can Boat, Swim, and enjoy the beautiful sunsets. It is unreal! The Ice Age was kind to northern Michigan, leaving in its wake an undulating landscape pocked by thousands of deep lakes carved by receding glaciers. Few, though, are as striking as Walloon Lake. Soil rich in calcium carbonate and clay, known as marl, casts the water a cerulean blue that would conjure the Caribbean were it not for the cedars, birches, and aspens that frame the nearly 30-mile shoreline. Its odd, paint-splat shape ensures that no view is the same; even longtime cottagers marvel at the difference in perspective from just a few doors down.Lured by the fresh Arctic air, Midwesterners eager to escape the summer swelter of Detroit and Chicago began coming to Walloon on the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad in the late 19th century. Once they reached the village at the eastern end of the lake, a "dummy train" would bring them to a steamboat that ferried them to their cottage.Among them were Clarence and Grace Hall Hemingway from Oak Park, Illinois, who built their cottage, Windemere, on the north end of the lake in 1899, the same year their son Ernest was born. The lake instilled a love of the outdoors in the novelist and inspired a series of short stories, including "The Three-Day Blow." "The genesis for all the Nick Adams stories was Walloon Lake," says Hemingway's nephew Ernie Mainland, referring to the author's semiautobiographical protagonist. Mainland, who now owns Windemere, reminisces about his boyhood summers in the 1950s when mothers and children spent June through Labor Day here and dads dropped in from the city on weekends. A fleet of sleek mahogany sailboats raced twice a week, and the water was so crystal clear, "if you were sailing and got thirsty, you reached over and drank from the lake," says Mainland.These days, motorboats outnumber sailboats and the lake is battling the invasive zebra and quagga mussels. Still, a sense of legacy remains strong. Many Wallooners are descendants of those who bought property here generations ago and feel more connected to the lake than to the places where they grew up. "Invariably, it's your grandparents or great-grandparents that first began coming here," says David Crouse, a television producer whose family has been summering on Walloon since 1895. He made the move to full-time resident ten years ago and is reminded why every time he comes home from his frequent travels: "When you step out into the night air, you smell that woodsy cedar smell. It welcomes you home. It goes to your soul."

Walloon Lake 

Lake Michigan is 2 miles away from Walloon Lake and is the sixth largest fresh water lake in the world. It is surrounded by picturesque towns and beaches and are a must to visit! Lake Michigan is the third largest Great Lake by surface area and the sixth largest freshwater lake in the world. Because Lake Michigan is joined to Lake Huron at the Straits of Mackinac, they are considered one lake hydrologically. Many rivers and streams flow into Lake Michigan, and the major tributaries are the Fox-Wolf, the Grand and the Kalamazoo. There is a diversion from the lake into the Mississippi River basin through the Illinois Waterway at the Chicago River. Lake Michigan's cul-de-sac formation means that water entering the lake circulates slowly and remains for a long time (retention) before it leaves the basin through the Straits of Mackinac. Small lunar tidal effects have been documented for Lake Michigan. Internal waves (upwellings) can produce a 15 degree C. water temperature decrease along the coast in only a few hours, requiring drastic alterations in fishing strategy. The northern part of the Lake Michigan watershed is covered with forests, sparsely populated, and economically dependent on natural resources and tourism, while the southern portion is heavily populated with intensive industrial development and rich agricultural areas along the shore. The world's largest freshwater dunes line the lakeshore. Millions of people annually visit the dunes/beaches at state and national parks and lakeshores.

Lake Michigan

The picturesque town of Petoskey, located on Little Traverse Bay, was known as Bear River when the first missionary arrived in 1855. The town was later renamed after the Ottawa Indian Chief Pe-to-se-ga. Petoskey was officially granted a charter in 1879. The Petoskey name was also adopted for Michigan's state stone, a fossilized coral found in abundance here. Its marking resemble the rays of the sun shining.Petoskey has been called the "land of the million dollar sunsets" ever since 1873. On a late fall day that year, the train whistled to a stop at the end of its line – Petoskey. On board was a reporter for a Grand Rapids newspaper, who in reporting on the wilderness scenery, rhapsodized about the area's "million dollar sunsets." And remember, that's when a million dollars was really a lot of money!By the summer of 1874 the railroads were making regular runs between Grand Rapids and Petoskey. The metamorphosis of Petoskey was rapid. It grew into a dynamic, busy village catering to the needs of sightseers. Luxury resort hotels were constructed near the railway depots.Along Bear River, water power was harnessed to run sawmills, flour mills, hardwood flooring industries, butter bowl factories and furniture-making industries.Little steamers plied the bay, and as quickly as rails could be laid, "dummy" trains ran routes between Petoskey and Harbor Springs at 15-minute intervals. Other regular routes took resorters to Alanson, Walloon Lake, and Charlevoix.By 1890, a substantial number of shops had sprung up along what is now Lake Street, creating a very unique shopping area originally known as the "Midway." These shops catered primarily to affluent resorters, and became the core of what is now called the "Gaslight District."The Downtown Gaslight District has evolved into a year-round shopping area. Several businesses thrive in Downtown today that have done business for 50 years or more. They include: The Circus Shop, J.C. Penney's, Grandpa Shorter's, Jesperson's, Meyer ACE Hardware, and Reusch Jewelers.In the midst of growing civilization, however, hills, lakes, rivers and sunsets are still here to enjoy. Downtown Petoskey is truly a place to treasure for generations to come.

The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Cherry_Festival" title="National Cherry Festival">National Cherry Festival</a>, held during the first full week of July every year, is a draw for tourists to Traverse City. The festival features parades, fireworks, an air show, election of festival royalty, live music, a pie-eating contest and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry" title="Cherry">cherries</a>. It is estimated that the Grand Traverse region produces up to 360,000,000 pounds (163,000,000 kg) of cherries annually. The largest variety of cherry produced locally is the Montmorency cherry, or the "pie cherry". Other cherries grown in the region include the Ulster, or sweet cherry, and the Balaton (from <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Balaton" title="Lake Balaton">Lake Balaton</a> in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungary" title="Hungary">Hungary</a>), a cherry situated between the Montmorency and Ulster in terms of color and taste. Mackinac Island is the truly "all natural" theme park of America. Limited to transportation of horse and buggy, bicycle or foot, surrounded by water, it has escaped the vast changes of time.Its real Victorian image is preserved and enhanced by a small population of 500 permanent residents and scores of summer residents, maintaining bluff cottages in original state. Families, especially children, love their relatively new found "mobility", exploring the historic, natural beauty of Mackinac Island State Park, honored by National Geographic as one of the ten finest in America.The calendar of events on Mackinac Island is highlighted by the Annual Lilac Festival, climaxed with one of the largest "All Horse Hitch" parades known. The American Bus Association has designated Mackinac Island's Lilac Festival as one of the nation's top 100 tourist attractions.The residents are warm and friendly, even during the Island's brief but unique winter holiday and cross-country season. Prices are best in winter, spring, and fall, of course, but the enjoyment level never fails to put new perspective into the concept of relaxation.When you step off of the Island Ferry Dock, you will be in a living Victorian village. Please cross streets on straight angles rather than diagonally and be aware of horses, bikes and people stepping off of carriages, enjoy the downtown hustle and bustle of the early 1800s but don't miss the beauty of the Island's interior and peaceful lakefront perimeter path.
