TRAVEL Q+A
When should I arrive to Bogotá?
Please plan to arrive in Bogotá on Thursday, January, 30th 2024. Be mindful that airlines might have delays or cancelations so we recommend flying a few days before the wedding. Once you have booked your flight, please share with us your flight details so we can arrange your airport transfer if needed. Go to the travel tab for more information on our trip the week before the wedding.
Which airport should I fly to?
El Dorado Airport (BOG) in Bogotá, Colombia.
Or Rafael Nuñez International Airport in Cartagena, Colombia, if you'll join us on our trip to Cartagena the week before the wedding.
WHAT AIRLINES ARE BEST TO FLY TO COLOMBIA?
Avianca or Copa Airlines often have direct flights to Bogotá. We recommend United Airlines and Delta Airlines. Spirit Airlines and Jetblue often offer discounted flights but make sure to check their baggage fees, especially for trips with layovers.
WHERE TO STAY
Go to the travel tab for more information on our suggested hotel. We will have transportation to and from the wedding venue there, and it's a good meeting place.
Airbnb
If you want to check other options Airbnb is a great option in Bogotá and Cartagena. We recommend looking for a place in Parque de la 93 area in Bogota and Centro historico in Cartagena that are close to the hotels. Keep in mind that larger groups mean lower prices.
HOW CAN I GET AROUND?
The best option to travel in Bogotá and Cartagena as a foreigner is Uber. Keep in mind that Uber is not *technically* legal in Colombia, so whenever you use one, be sure to sit in the front seat to avoid any trouble. We recommend that if you use the public transportation system or taxis, you make sure you do so with a local.
WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE IN BOGOTA?
The weather in Bogotá can range between 45°F at night and early in the morning to 75°F during the day. We recommend pants and a light jacket or sweatshirt to wear around Bogotá. Always carry an umbrella if you can. Because the venue is higher up in the mountains, temperatures might drop faster than you expect, so make sure to bring a coat to the wedding.
WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE IN CARTAGENA?
The weather in Cartagena can range between 80°F at night and 95°F during the day. We recommend summer clothes to wear around Cartagena
SAFETY TIPS
1. Take some time to research Bogotá and get familiar with the city. Look up interesting neighborhoods, popular places, and local customs. It will help you feel more at ease.
2. Learn some Spanish basics, knowing a few Spanish phrases can go a long way. Greet people, ask for directions, and learn a couple of emergency phrases.
3. Get a reliable ride, and opt for ride-sharing services like Uber or Didi ( be sure to sit in the front seat to avoid any trouble). They are reliable and safer than a random taxi on the street, especially after dark.
4. Keep your things under control (or as we say in Colombia "no des papaya"). Don't leave your valuables unattended, don't use your phone while walking down the street, and keep the car windows all the way close, especially in traffic.
5. Bogotá can be very crowded, so be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or on public transportation.
6. Avoid dimly lit places. Stick to well-lit, crowded areas when you're out and about, especially at night. Avoid wandering into dodgy or unfamiliar neighborhoods.
7. Dress casually and mix it up. To avoid unnecessary attention, we recommend dressing like a local, which means pants, or early spring clothes.
8. Keep important phone numbers on your phone, such as those for emergency services, your hotel, and your embassy or consulate. Here are some phone numbers that may be helpful in an emergency:
123: Use it in case you need the police or an ambulance (it's our 911)
Camilo Mendez (Natalia's cousin): +57 3226812587
Winny Hurtado (Maid of honor): +57 3214722113
Andrés Delgado (Natalia's brother): +57 3505277539
