Debbie and Brian's Story

On December 4, 2005, fate had a reservation in Woodbridge, Virginia—at a steak restaurant, of all places.

Debbie Nicholson had planned a girls’ night out, but when her girlfriends didn’t show, she found herself standing there alone, deciding whether to head home or make the best of the moment. Brian Mitchell was already there, dining solo. Rather than eat alone, Debbie gathered her courage, walked over, and asked if she could join him. Brian said yes—and that simple, brave question changed everything.

Dinner turned into easy conversation. Conversation turned into exchanged phone numbers. And soon there were calls, chats, and endless texts. What began as an unexpected friendship quietly and naturally grew into something deeper. Still, Debbie carried the weight of her past and guarded her heart carefully. Brian, steady and patient, was happy to move at her pace.

Brian wouldn’t meet the family for almost a year, but once he did, he was fully immersed—no shortcuts taken. The early years brought plenty of real life: kids, family drama, kids with splinters that somehow found their way into places splinters should never be, and the emotional roller coaster of adolescence. Through it all, Brian showed up. Calm. Supportive. Present. While most people might not immediately describe Brian as patient, those who truly know him understand that when it comes to what matters most, his patience runs deep.

Debbie, determined not to repeat her past, made a promise to herself: Brian wouldn’t earn the title of “boyfriend” until they had been together seven years—the length of her previous relationship. Brian waited, never pushing, never rushing, simply loving her as they built a life side by side.

After nine years together, Debbie finally asked Brian to move in. But once again, life had other plans. Debbie’s parents needed her, and just nine months later, Debbie and Lauren moved in with her parents to help. Brian and Timothy remained in Debbie’s home, holding down the fort.

In time, Lauren left for college. Debbie returned home—but not alone. She brought her mother with her. By then, Tim had graduated and moved out, while JC (Brian's son) was still at the house with his girlfriend (now wife), Taylor. Not you typical family but a family nonetheless. Less than a year after moving back, Debbie’s mother passed away.

Together, Debbie and Brian navigated unimaginable grief and the daunting task of sorting through five garage-sized storage units filled with memories and love.

A few years later, they faced another heartbreak with the passing of Brian’s mother. Once again, they leaned on each other, proving that their bond was not only built on joy, but on resilience, faith, and unwavering partnership.

Through years of therapy and a rekindling of faith, Debbie found her way back to trust and commitment. Brian, who had quietly stood beside her through every chapter, was still there—steady as ever.

It is because of all these moments—the unexpected dinner, the patience, the family, the losses, the healing, and the faith—that Debbie and Brian now stand together. Surrounded by family and friends, they choose to declare their love publicly, grateful for the journey that brought them here and excited for all that lies ahead.
