We met initially back in 2014 through mutual mentorship. She was still in college and I had graduated recently. I use the term “met” loosely, as it was really her catching my eye when she walked in the room for the first time. “Wow, she’s beautiful” I thought to myself. It wasn’t until a few weeks later that we had our first (and only) conversation. It was brief, but enjoyable…and then we didn’t see each other again for 5 years.

Fast forward to November 2019, we’re both working adults. It’s a random Saturday evening in Richmond, she’s been out with friends since brunch that afternoon, and I worked 8 hrs that day then went to dinner with my roommate and his fiancé. Both groups wind up at the same location at the end of the night. I notice a familiar face by the bar, walk up to her and give her some dap (no hug, just dap) before rejoining my friends.

As the night progresses, both groups thin out as people begin to head home. Both of us are now 3rd wheeling within our respective groups, who have made their way to the dance floor area. We haven’t spoken since earlier in the evening, but I notice her dancing kind of by herself. “No Letting Go” by Wayne Wonder comes on, so I decide to join her. It turns out, we both love the song….

We exchange numbers and hang out Sunday and play cards and just chill. Monday we hang out again, and talk until 3am. We’ve been together ever since…
