Our Wedding

COVID update / 1.14.21

Based on the number of active virus cases in our county, Kentucky state guidelines request zero gatherings of any size. Without knowing how the situation will develop, and with many guests attempting interstate travel, we've made the difficult decision to limit in-person wedding attendance to the bridal party &amp; immediate family only. While this seems like the wise decision in light of current CDC guidelines, we love you all &amp; wish you could all be here to celebrate with us. The streaming link will be posted here, and an updated wedding time is coming soon!

First of all, thank you so much for coming! We are delighted to be able to host a few of our many loved ones in person, and will have to host the rest of you whenever you swing through the east coast.These are strange times, and plans can change overnight, so we'll keep you updated here with the set-in-stone plans, requests, and expectations; we'll also let you know if anything else changes. We've tried to come up with contingency plans, but can't account for everything—which means you're the ones shouldering the inconvenience, and we appreciate your flexibility and grace in still trying to celebrate with us!Here are the guidelines for our event. Thanks for accommodating.

COVID-19 mindfulness

Masks

In the spirit of loving your neighbor, masks are firmly requested. This helps keep your germs to yourself, and protects those other guests (who may be at higher risk) from contracting any kind of immune-compromising illness. If you forget your mask the day of, we will have extras available. Thank you to everyone who can graciously shoulder the inconvenience for weaker people.

Distancing

Our venue is large enough that our guests can safely stay six feet apart, even if we all end up inside because of the weather.

Small guest list

In light of changing gathering guidelines &amp; the amount of travel involved for many of our desired guests, we decided to keep it small to minimize the risk for people attending. This also means we couldn't invite a lot of people we wanted to, and struggled to find a good number balance.Please limit your social media posting in light of this. Spend time enjoying the people instead of using your phone; and if you want to post pictures, please be considerate—of those who couldn't attend, and of those who stayed home trying to be more cautious.

What to wear

Weather

It's March in Kentucky, so this means the wedding day could be anywhere from snowy to short-sleeved dream. Since we'd like the ceremony to be outside, dress for cold weather, but wear layers just in case. Check the weather before doing your packing (you may need a heavier coat or a lighter dress), but expect to be attending a winter wedding. Do not expect the green buds and caroling birds of May.

Dress code

Think of this as business casual. There's no need for a cocktail gown or even three-piece suits, but you may feel awkward in your favorite jeans. We're going for elegant and approachable; a string of pearls or a floral tie is perfect.

How it really happened

They first saw each other at a class in the Redeemer Fellowship Church basement. It was February; they made eye contact; that was it. In March, Deryn popped up in Adam's suggested friends list on Facebook (bless the algorithm) and he sent her a friend request. They both remembered the eye contact, and immediately started discussing English literature. Deryn had left Boston for Louisville the week before lockdown; Adam was in Florida; they started sending each other Jane Austen memes. By April, they were embroiled in a sometimes heated exchange over some finer points of protestant reformed theology. The conversation crossed through emails and texts and phone calls, and they continued to discuss poetry and books and ideas, and debate and consider and refine, until they decided to also think about a relationship. It was in tentative stages until July, when Adam came back to Cambridge to pack up his dorm. In July, Adam and Deryn met again in person. Deryn had to get home early. He was giving her some books, so she managed to see him again the next day; but the course of true love never did run smooth. He thought she was friend-zoning, she thought he gave her the brush-off. They had a further miscommunication over text, and figured it was all over. By August, it just wasn't over, and Adam called to check in and say, "Hey: I'm still interested, so if you want to give it a shot in the next few weeks or months, just give me an indication." And Deryn said, "...Can this be my indication?" On October 31, they watched the sun rise over the beach at St. Augustine. Walking to brunch, they passed a palm-treed courtyard with lights and a koi pond and a mossy stone bridge. Deryn said, "Oh my gosh, a bridge! I want to walk on it!" Then Adam knelt down, said several things that neither of them remembers, and asked her to marry him. She said yes, and they got complimentary celebratory champagne at brunch.
