It was summer May 2015... the basketball tournament was over for the day so Ms. Toni, Destiny's mom, decided to throw a get-together for the team in the hotel's lobby. This was a common thing since Ms. Toni's kids had been part of the Tallahassee Spurs for 5+ years. Jayshawn was new to the team at the time, but he'd had his eyes set on Destiny since the first day he joined. Destiny was the sister of 2 of his teammates and if you asked him, he’d say she was distant, antisocial, intimidating, and the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen all in one. Jayshawn, a shy and quiet kid at the time, knew he had to have her, but never mustered up the courage to speak to her. Well, that night during the team party, Destiny and her friend were sitting in the lobby laughing and joking with some of the other players when suddenly they spotted Jayshawn walking past by himself. "Hey Jayshawn! Come sit with us.”, Destiny said. “Why were you over there by yourself?" He was stunned. He didn't even know that she knew his name. He shyly went to sit with them, and they welcomed him into their conversation and continued to laugh and joke. Towards the end of the evening, Jayshawn became more comfortable and loved talking to Destiny. They talked about foods they liked, what schools they went to, sports they played, and how they hated how the referees cheated the team out of a win earlier that day. After hours of laughing, debating, and some friendly bets Jayshawn courteously asked Destiny if he could walk her to her room, they exchanged social media information and from there they were stuck like glue.
Seven years later on Sunday, December 25, 2022, Jayshawn & Destiny hosted Christmas at their new home. They prepared a feast, played games, and after everyone was done opening gifts, Jayshawn told Destiny she had 1 more gift. He pulled out a poem that he had written for her based off her favorite movie, Love Jones, and asked her to marry him.
Through High School, four years of distance in college, anticipated summer breaks home, losses, wins, disagreements, and new careers, - these two have always been by each other's side. As Destiny always says, "I guess teenagers do know a thing or 2 about love".
They could not be more thrilled for this next chapter of their life together to begin and are so excited to celebrate their true love with family and friends in a wonderful weekend of events starting Saturday November 30, 2024.
