It was 2009, our sophomore year of high school, and we were in homeroom. That day, I met my best friend—having no idea that nearly 16 years later, we’d be planning our wedding. Through the years, we’ve fought, celebrated, mourned, and grown together. Over time, without even realizing it, our lives intertwined. What started as a friendship blossomed into the most wonderful gift we could have ever asked for—love. Two people who once made fun of cheesy couples and romantic gestures suddenly, and happily, became the epitome of both. Whether you're looking for a scenic hike suited for novice hikers or a more challenging hike along fields of lava, you'll find it here.&nbsp; Petroglyph Hike&nbsp;&nbsp;This hike, offered weekly by Fairmont Orchid Hui Holokai Beach Ambassadors, explores the largest petroglyph field on Hawaii Island. It's the largest concentration of petroglyphs in the Pacific, located within the 233-acre Puako Petroglyph Archeological District. The field has over 3,000 carvings, most of which were made thousands of years ago, including paddlers, sails, marchers, dancers and family groups as well as dogs, chickens, turtles and deity symbols. On a difficulty scale of 0-10 with 10 high, this hike is a 5 considering the distances and diverse terrain, from sidewalks and uneven ground such as walking over Kiawe tree roots, rocks and lava. Your guide will take you into the past through these magnificent messages left by the islands ancestors. The hike begins at the beach shack.&nbsp;Please check the resort guide for the weekly schedule.&nbsp;&nbsp; Cultural Hike&nbsp;&nbsp;Ranging from the ancient people's lava cave dwellings to pictorial petroglyphs (lava etchings) and sacred ahu (shrine), the guided cultural hikes led by the Fairmont Orchids Hui Holokai Beach Ambassadors lead you through inland fishponds once reserved for the alii (royalty), along oceanfront trails and more. You might even learn a Hawaiian greeting oli chant as well to take home in voice and song.&nbsp;Please check the resort guide for the weekly schedule.&nbsp;&nbsp; Pololu Valley Lookout&nbsp;Located just 20 minutes from the artsy little town of Hawi, you'll find a steep but short hike that'll take you down a lush tropical cliff to a rugged black sand beach. The trip down can be made leisurely in 30-45 minutes one way. Consider taking a picnic basket along to enjoy while sitting on the rugged beach. Pololu is one of the most scenic valleys in the state! Don't forget to take your hiking boots and plenty of water! Akaka Falls State Park&nbsp;&nbsp;Located along the northeastern Hamakua Coast, you can see two gorgeous waterfalls on one short hike. The pleasant 0.4-mile uphill hike will take you through a lush rainforest filled with wild orchids, bamboo groves and draping ferns. As you follow the paved footpath, you'll first see 100-foot Kahuna Falls. Continue to follow the loop around the bend and you'll discover towering Akaka Falls, which plummets 442-feet into a stream-eroded gorge. Beautiful Akaka Falls is perhaps Hawai'i Island's most famous waterfall.&nbsp;

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park protects some of the most unique geological, biological, and cherished cultural landscapes in the world. Extending from sea level to 13,680 feet, the park encompasses the summits of two of the world's most active volcanoes - Kīlauea and Mauna Loa - and is a designated International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. 45 minutes (30 miles) southwest of Hilo, Hwy. 112 hours (90 miles) southeast of Waikoloa, Hwy. 2002-2.5 hours (95 miles) southeast of Kailua-Kona, Hwy. 11 The park is open 24 hours daily, year round. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

One of the best and most popular wildlife viewing activities in Hawaii is whale watching. With deep sea shelves within just a few miles of the coasts, it’s easy to find whales in their natural environment. And while neighboring Maui sees about 10,000 different humpback whales migrate south from Alaska, the Big Island’s deep coastal trench attracts as many as 18 different marine mammals that you won’t find elsewhere in the Hawaiian islands. From sperm whales to orcas and melon headed whales, there is plenty to see and appreciate throughout the waters surrounding the Big Island. Should you find yourself on the Island of Hawaii, making an effort to go whale watching is an unforgettable experience, but you’ll need to do a bit of planning to make it happen.
