In the mood for some golf, here are the 5 top golf courses in Sicily:
1. Il Picciolo
It is Sicily’s oldest golf course and possibly the most stunning on the island. It is located right on Mount Etna’s slopes in a natural amphitheater not far from Taormina with fantastic views. There aren’t many places in the world where it is possible to play on an active volcano! Il Picciolo also hosts some international tournaments such as the Ladies’ European Tour events. Lava flows, trees and vineyards make the course relatively challenging. One of the advantages of Il Picciolo is that it is possible to play all year: the ground does not freeze in winter and summer since it is over 2000 feet of altitude, and the proximity of the sea softens the climate.
2. Verdura Golf Resort
It has two separate 18-hole championship courses: the East Course and the West Course and a smaller 9-hole option which will inspire the novice player and set a challenge for the most experienced. The views here are of rolling hills along the shore, and the grounds are beautiful. Golf architect Kyle Phillips designed the courses, and the club offers first-rate teaching facilities. It is ideal for visiting two of Sicily’s most impressive Greek temple complexes, Agrigento and Selinunte, both within a 40km (25-mile) radius. Verdura is often described as the most luxurious golf course in Sicily.
3. Donnafugata Golf Resort
It is located not far from Ragusa, near the beautiful coastline and wonderful countryside featuring the carob trees and dry-stone walls of the region. There are two great courses here, one of which was designed by Gary Player. Its great location is close to Modica, Noto, Scicli e Ragusa and the beaches at Marina di Ragusa and Punta Secca.
4. Disìo Golf Resort
It is spread over the hills of Marsala in the beautiful surroundings of the province of Trapani. It is an ideal destination for golfers searching for a tranquil, botanical paradise and a driving range golf course. It comes complete with a fine restaurant, tennis court, swimming pool, games and entertainment for children, and several relaxation and wellness areas.
5. Le Saie Golf Resort
It is an 18-hole championship golf course, nestled between Mount Etna and the coast of Catania. Well-known golf architect Franco Piras designed it. The course is set in lush surroundings and, on a good day, the views of Etna make a game on its undulating paths a real pleasure for players of all abilities. Golfers can participate in a full 18 holes or visit the driving range or pitching green to sharpen their skills. On-site there is a golf academy, swimming pools and tennis courts.
