Once upon a brunch…

On March 11th, 2023, we met for the first time at the opening of Verbena Kitchen in North Park, San Diego. We didn’t know it then, but the stars had already done the planning for us. Huib had just landed in California, far from home, and somehow ended up just down the way from where Dee was born and raised. Both of our families, at one time, had even lived in The Hague. Call it fate, divine timing, or just a really good reservation… but something bigger than us brought us together that day. From the very beginning, Dee knew. The moment Huib stretched out his arms with a warm, heartfelt smile to greet her. Something just clicked, a feeling of home. His accent, gentle and unmistakably Dutch, immediately reminded Dee of her childhood, the comforting sound of her great-grandmother’s accent from The Hague. It wasn’t just familiarity; it was warmth, safety, and love wrapped in a voice she hadn’t realized she’d missed until that very moment. For Huib, love came like a rising tide. With every conversation, every moment of vulnerability, Dee responded with warmth, kindness, and love. Bit by bit, walls came down. And in that safe space, something deep and lasting took root. We had both made wish lists for the kind of person we hoped to meet. And yet, what we found in each other was far beyond anything we could have dreamed up. We laugh together constantly, in the best moments and even in the hardest ones. Whether we’re country dancing in Nashville, rocking out at local San Diego venues, nerding out over stock market news, biking the windy paths of Terschelling, or moving house across continents… we always manage to find joy, laughter, and lightness. We’re that couple who somehow always know what the other is thinking. Huib will get Dee a drink just as she realizes she’s thirsty. Dee will ask the exact question Huib is holding in his mind. It’s uncanny, and it’s us. This kind of connection leads to spontaneous dancing in the kitchen, singing duets when no one’s watching, and a feeling of being perfectly in tune. Through visa delays, international moves, big life changes, and tiny daily rituals, we’ve found not just love, but deep friendship, understanding, and calm in each other. We always say: our love is a fairy tale. Huib is Dee’s prince charming. Dee is Huib’s beautiful princess. And somehow, through all of life’s twists and turns, we found each other. We are each other’s true North.We are forever home.
