On the evening of December 31, 2021, while the world was full of excitement and anticipation for the New Year, two lives that had been running parallel were about to converge in the most unexpected ways. Michael, a New York City Police Officer from Long Island was on duty that night at the heart of the celebrations in Times Square. Though surrounded by the vibrant energy of the night, Michael could not help but think about sharing the moment and creating memories with someone special. During his break, Michael logged on to Match.com. He came across Diane’s profile which sparked his curiosity. Without a second thought, he swiped right. Meanwhile, Diane from Staten Island was cozy and warm at home, with no grand plans for the evening. With the final hours of the year ticking away, she found herself on Match.com. After countless swipes, she came across Michael’s profile. His profile caught her eye and she swiped right. It was a match! Despite the excitement of a match, Diane and Michael did not start talking right away. On January 2, 2022, Michael broke the ice and messaged Diane, “Hey there! Happy New Year! How did you ring in 2022?” From there, the conversation flowed where they discovered similar interests and a desire for something real. Their first date was set for January 26, 2022, at Panino Rustico on Staten Island. Despite the winter chill outside, the evening was filled with warmth as they spent hours getting to know each other. In the beginning, Diane and Michael took things slow. Between the distance and their schedules, they only saw each other once a week. Neither of them minded. The time apart made their moments together even more special. In May 2022, Diane invited Michael to her nephew’s first birthday party. As Michael mingled with Diane’s family, an unexpected connection was revealed— their mothers had gone to high school together. As the summer turned into fall, Diane and Michael’s relationship grew stronger. In November 2022, Michael ran the New York City Marathon. Diane and both their families were there to cheer him on. As their mothers reconnected on the sidelines, reminiscing about old times, their fathers bonded over beers, discovering they shared mutual friends. After Michael crossed the finish line, they both realized their connection was more than a mere chance— it was fate. By the time the year came to a close, Diane and Michael were no longer just dating. They were building a future together, one that started with a swipe on New Year’s Eve and grew into something neither one of them could have ever imagined.

Sloan and Steady Wins the Race

During the Spring of 2024, Michael attempted to propose on multiple occasions, but Diane was so oblivious that she unintentionally interfered with his plans. Michael finally proposed on May 31, 2024. The couple went for dinner at Pastavino on Staten Island and then went for a walk by the water with the Verrazzano Bridge in the background. Diane was a few steps ahead of Michael when she realized he stopped walking and started talking. She turned around and Michael was on his knee. Diane knew it would eventually happen but was beyond shocked and speechless that it was happening at that moment. Her response was “Is this a joke? Are you kidding me? Is this for real?” Michael asked again and Diane said “YES!”
