Our Story

Elizabeth's Side of the Story

Picture it: a sunny Sunday morning in October. The bells in the tower at Cornerstone Reformed Church, Carbondale have ceased their ringing, and the worship service is about to begin. A light breeze blows. The leaves in the trees are about to change. So is the rest of my life.

I met Drew that Sunday. He decided to sit on the opposite side of the sanctuary than where he had sat, undetected by me, for the past few weeks. This was not missed by me, and when it came time to greet your neighbor, I meandered my way towards this stranger and made a point to shake his hand and say hello. Nothing else. Don’t be foolish, Elizabeth.

After worship, I dropped some things off in my car, not missing the fact that the same guy from the hand-shaking occasion stood nearby, visiting with my church friend’s dad. Lo and behold, I got called over and introduced. Not a matchmaking effort, but a job search inquiry. Who’s complaining though?

Drew Snider. A senior at SIU, neat. In Forestry?! That’s the exact same thing my dad did! My dad has his own forestry business, yes. Is he hiring? I’m not sure, you can ask him. Here’s his number.

Drew and I immediately connected over forestry, but from different angles. I grew up in the Ozark mountains, immersed in forestry, planting trees, participating in prescribed burns, etc, but without most of the scientific knowledge. Drew came from the flatness of Central Illinois croplands and was just finishing his university years.

An extended coffee date, numerous phone calls, and countless hikes later, I am marrying Drew.

The gratitude I have for the people that held me up when I was sinking and rejoiced with me in my gladness, cannot be expressed. This is the goodness of God.

Drew's Side of the Story

The clock was ticking on that sunny October morning. I had procrastinated too long before leaving my apartment and the service was about to start. Fortunately, there was an open seat in a pew a few rows over from where I usually sat.

This was very opportunistic for me as a girl I had noticed just a week before was seated just a few rows ahead. When it came time to speak peace to your neighbor, the girl, who introduced herself as Elizabeth, walked calmly and confidently up to me and shook my hand. Happily striding back to my seat, I found that a smile was cementing into my expression for the remainder of the service. I knew I had just met someone very special.

While I was certainly glad that I got to introduce myself, I thought that was too brief. I had to prompt another opportunity. Perhaps next week or the week after. Anyway, I had a lot on my mind: I needed to find a job and I thought it worth while to ask around after the service. While that morning did not end with an avenue to a potential job, it did end with grace and chance. God was gracious to me by placing Elizabeth in the right moment and time. We talked about forestry, her dad, and the weather. Now, we are getting married. How blessed am I to have Elizabeth in my life and to be my bride.

Wedding Party

Phoebe Gaskins
Phoebe Gaskins - Maid of Honor
Phoebe is the fun-loving, determined, athletic, artistic, and extremely funny younger sister of the bride. They have lived together for all but about two and a half years, and they have enjoyed most of it. Phoebe is also the best third wheel. (Thanks, Pheebs)
Tim Jesgarz
Tim Jesgarz - Best Man
Since high school Drew and Tim have been close friends. They quickly befriended one another because of their shared passion for the outdoors. Between bow hunting whitetails on public land and scouting during the off-season they have a warehouse of outdoor memories. Some include missing deer, while others include standing over nice bucks. Drew was there when Tim married the love of his life, now its Tim's turn.
Caroline Doolittle
Caroline Doolittle - Matron of Honor
Caroline is Elizabeth's older sister and the reason she moved to Illinois: Who can turn down an offer to split rent with a sibling right around the time you're thinking of moving out? Not Elizabeth. Caroline, the first of the sisters to get a driver's license, drove us all over the midwest. The first of us to turn 21, she also... just kidding. Kinda. Elizabeth third wheeled for Caroline and her then boyfriend (now HUSBAND) Osborne all the way to NC and back. In turn, she hung out with Drew and Elizabeth awhile before getting married.
Ben Houska
Ben Houska - Groomsman
Even before the fist day of kindergarten, Drew and Ben were friends. During long school days and short summer months Drew and Ben simply had fun. They hiked along the meandering creeks of Illinois, explored Drew's haunted childhood home, and fished the pond at Drew's family farm. Ben has always been a brother to Drew and that will always be true.
Lilli Lindstrom
Lilli Lindstrom - Bridesmaid
The bride’s Illinois sister and longest penpal, Lilli and Elizabeth grew up together, but about 3 hours apart. Living for the times they got to see one another, for church conferences and canoe trips, they have stayed close friends.
Olivia Marsh
Olivia Marsh - Bridesmaid
Olivia is a jewel, regularly giving of herself on behalf of others and standing loyally with her people. Olivia is always down to hang out or go for a walk, something Elizabeth has benefited from countless times.
Steven Adams
Steven Adams - Groomsman
Drew and Steven met while Drew was serving in the military in Utah. At the time Steven was assisting with leading Stride Ministries, a Christian group specifically for military members and their families. Drew joined the group in 2019. Since then Steven and Drew remained close friends, even after Drew left the service. Steven is and always will be one of God's special blessings in Drew's life. Steven is a friend that some never find. A friend who is there for troublesome valleys and victorious peaks.
Becca Hinds
Becca Hinds - Bridesmaid
With her infectious smile and glowing spirit, Becca brings enthusiasm and Christ’s love where she goes. Elizabeth spent lots of time with Becca in the church nursery during their first years, and stayed friends as they grew up, going to church together for several years and swapping teaching stories.
Nolan Stojentin
Nolan Stojentin - Groomsman
Nolan Stojentin was Drew's boss in college. From picking up chemicals to boating on campus lake, Nolan and Drew have done pretty much everything and been everywhere at SIU. As coworkers they handled chemicals which could dissolve bone. As friends they enjoyed lunch breaks at Chick-fil-A, making fun of woke professors, and driving the tar out of a truck named Betty.
Julia Gaskins
Julia Gaskins - Bridesmaid
Yes! Another Gaskins sister joins the lineup. Julia is the animal enthusiast of the family, a voracious reader, and a relatable sister. Julia is the closest sister to Elizabeth in looks (you should see Elizabeth in Julia's glasses), and a phenomenal car trip companion.
Eli Orbele
Eli Orbele - Groomsman
Ask Drew how many neighbors it took before he got one that wasn't weird and he will say never, but he did meet Eli. Eli was Drew's neighbor for the better half of his college days. Together they wrote some scientific journal worthy papers, discussed woodsmanship over frosty beverages, and learned about a derecho. Have you ever heard of a derecho?
Emme Whitney
Emme Whitney - Bridesmaid
Emme is little sister to the groom, and soon to be big sister to the bride. In Elizabeth's theoretical wedding plans since she was 12 (any ladies with Pinterest get it), she always had an empty spot in the bridal party for a hypothetical sister in law. Emme fills the role perfectly! She has been encouraging and enthusiastic from Day 1.
Michael Gaskins
Michael Gaskins - Groomsman
Michael is the younger brother of the bride. If he were to wake up in the days of the frontier, he would have no trouble at all. Indeed, Micheal is a young man of many talents! He can I.D. ducks from hundreds of yards away, catch fish better than Bill Dance, and hunt like Daniel Boone. From high top ridges to low hollers, there ain't no place he can't go.
Hope Gaskins
Hope Gaskins - Junior Bridesmaid
Watching a friend get the elevated title of Junior Bridesmaid at the age of 13 caused Elizabeth to promise that, given the chance, she too would bestow this honor upon a sister. Hope is a prime candidate! Mature for her 11 years, but cheerful and funny, she is a perfect addition to the wedding party!
