We first met at Dayspring, a church camp held at Crosspoint in Kingston, OK. We had both gone for three years and did not really talk to each other. We ended up in the same small group our senior year, but still didn't make enough of an impression on each other to remain friends after camp.
We matched on a dating app, because how else do you meet people in this day and age. But right before we matched, we had both gotten lunch separately with a mutual friend just to catch up on life, and that friend (shout out to Emily) mentioned us to the other. So apparently when we saw each other online, those conversations were still a forefront on the mind. Ebby thinks it is funny to acknowledge people she knows on dating apps, but Garrett was more thoughtful than that.
So we started chit-chatting and conversation flowed between us so easily. We quickly became each other's best friend and got along so well. Ebby said Garrett had to actually ask her to be his girlfriend, so they could have a date to celebrate, and not just assume they were together. So on September 26, 2023, driving back from Chili's, Garrett said, "Even though I think this is silly, and we are already together, will you be my girlfriend." Ebby said yes, obviously. We developed such a comfortable relationship in a short amount of time, it just felt like we were meant to be. The saying of, "you know when you know" perfectly describes us. We would always look forward to spending time together, and spent a lot of time driving between Moore and Edmond. (Even though Garrett doesn't actually live in Moore, despite going to Moore schools.)
On October 14, 2024, Garrett told Ebby they were going to dinner with one of his friends she hadn't met yet. They went to a pizza place they frequent often. The location in Edmond has an art display of giant metal letters spelling out LOVE. People go and put locks on them, like they do at bridges. As they walked towards the restaurant, Garrett stopped and said I have a surprise for us. He pulled a lock and marker out of his pocket and said, "I meant to do this around our anniversary but we made other plans, so I thought we would do it now. We should write our names on it. We should also add a date. What date do you want to put on it, our anniversary, the day we reconnected, or the day we got engaged?" Ebby's eyes got super wide and she said, "Are you serious?" Then he got down on his knee, asked her to marry him, and she said yes and started sobbing. He did a good job of keeping the secret from her and surprising her.
