Charlie and Beths initial encounter took place in high school, where they would periodically cross paths and maintained a connection through mutual friends. When Charlie was involved in an accident on his way back from lunch, Beth pulled over to check on him. He assured her he was okay, and his dad was on the way. He told ger her to head back to school to avoid being late. From then on, they sat together in their shared classes and at lunch. One day, while waiting in line in English class to turn in their assignments, Charlie gently picked up Beths braid and joked that he would marry her someday. At the time, neither of them realized the significance of this statement. Following their high school graduation, they went their separate ways but were eventually reunited by fate after completing their individual journeys of self-discovery.
