We met in Lexington in 2019, when Matt had just finished a degree and I (Liz) had just begun the process of auditioning for grad schools. Neither of us were expecting to fall in love at the time, but from the moment we met, being with each other just felt like home. So when I (Liz) was offered a great opportunity at a graduate program in Illinois, it just made sense that Matt would come too.
When we moved to Illinois we had no idea that we were about to enter into a pandemic. It was just us and our two cats (Bartie & Belle), in a little apartment. It could have felt very isolating, but instead we had time to become each other’s family and to truly get to know each other completely. We loved our time in Illinois but when I finished my degree, we both knew we wanted to be in Kentucky, closer to the people we love.
In the time since moving back to Kentucky, we have been able to reconnect with family and friends and spend more time out of the house together. Because of our time in Illinois and the pandemic, we’d spent very little time in Kentucky as a couple. It has been so fun spending the last couple years showing each other our favorite things about the place we grew up. We were very lucky to add two doggie editions (Daisy & Delilah) to our family in 2022 and have spent many sunny days walking them at the University of Kentucky Arboretum. In May of 2023 Matt proposed in the butterfly garden on one of these walks. It was perfect. We are beyond excited to step into this next chapter of our love story and to celebrate with our family and friends.
