In June 2021, Ellie had three friends in town (shout out to Elle, Elizabeth, and Margaret) and ended up at McIntyre's in the Heights on a Friday night with her Houston friends. Owen and his roommates happened to be having a night out at the same bar. During a pause in their respective conversations, Owen and Ellie cheers-ed, and Owen asked Ellie what she was drinking, to which she said a ranch water.

Somewhat out of character, Owen claimed he could tell the difference between good & bad tequila. Never one to back down from a challenge, Ellie then told Owen to prove it and ordered two good and two bad tequilas from the bartender. After trying both, Ellie asked what the consequence would be if he was wrong. Owen offered a drink to which Ellie upped the ante to dinner, since they both had just had plenty of tequila. Luckily, Owen was wrong, and they went out to dinner two weeks later.

Over dinner, they realized their dads went to high school and college together, their brothers were fraternity brothers, and numerous other connections that brought them together. Three years and many lake weekends, friends' weddings, and Houston date nights later, Owen proposed at White Rock Lake in Dallas before the July 4th weekend!
