On their first encounter Emily: This was our very first picture. I remember it was about a week after we met in September, 2015- we might have been in our 2nd or 3rd Spanish class. We always went to Pergamino, this cute coffee shop in Poblado. Sindy had asked me if we could take that photo- she was also new to the city and wanted to promote her Spanish classes. I said yes, of course. About two weeks later she put it as her Whataspp Profile Picture. I almost died. I remember telling one of my friends, ¨This is a sign!¨&nbsp; Sindy: I honestly took the picture with Emily because she seemed really open and I thought she would be happy to do it for me. I'm really glad we still have this photo-even though it´s a screenshot, because it is a remembrance of our first connection. You can see it in our faces- it´s too obvious. And I made it my profile picture because Emily was my favorite student… and she ended up being my favorite person. Who knew? Jaja Probably us.

When they started dating Emily: It was Sindy´s birthday- well, actually two days before her birthday. December 17th, 2016. I remember the day vividly- I had just bought my first road bike and I was practicing riding in the parking garage of my apartment building. One of my co-workers who lived there saw me and hung out for a while. She asked if I was excited to be on winter break. I said- yes, I'm excited and really nervous. When she asked why, I responded: ¨I think I´m gonna kiss the girl I´ve had a crush on for the past year and half, tonight.¨ Sindy: I knew something was gonna happen- I wasn´t sure what, but I knew something. I was so excited to see her. Other friends were there, but I was so excited to see Ems. I wanted to laugh with her and hang out with her.&nbsp; Emily: I´m literally horrible at making the first move. As you can see from the photo, I thought swapping one of our shoes was the way to her heart.&nbsp; Sindy: I thought it was absolutely ridiculous that she was wearing one of my heels. Jaja. Later that night, I asked one of my friends, Fiona, if I should kiss her and she said, ¨Yeah, go for it!¨ Emily: The rest is history… jaja

When they got engaged Sindy: It was the most beautiful place I´ve ever seen in my entire life. I was so mad at her… Emily: jajajaja. It was about two weeks before the whole world shut down for Covid 19.&nbsp;I had gone to this amazing thermal hot springs the previous Thanksgiving with a few of my biking buddies and I had thought: this is where I´m gonna propose! Sindy: She took me on a ¨camping trip¨ that turned into a two day road trip on a moto to a mystery camping site.&nbsp; Emily: It was supposed to be a suprise! Jaja&nbsp; Sindy: We had been driving for two days on an open road, and then we hit a paramo 4000 meters above sea level. And the first thing she asked me when we arrived, (the last hour having been in a rainstorm), was if I wanted to go for a hike. I was gonna kill her.&nbsp; Emily: I mean, it was still raining, so I could kind of see her point…&nbsp; Sindy: I went with the flow, because I always go with the flow with Emily. Emily: And?&nbsp; Sindy: Well, I was in shock. I was angry, happy, confused, cold… I thought it was the most beautiful place in the world. The rocks behind the waterfall were covered in moss- she knows that I love moss.&nbsp; Emily: I was so nervous. Sindy: I thought she fell, but she was getting down on her knee. She looked very nervous, and I thought she was the prettiest person ever. I felt really lucky. Emily: She said yes!&nbsp; Sindy: Of course I did! What did you think was gonna happen?

Flights

We recommend using<a href="https://www.google.com/travel/flights" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> Google Flights </a>or<a href="https://www.kayak.com/flights" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> Kayak </a>to search for flights to Medellin (MDE airport code). You also might choose to fly to Bogota (BOG) and then fly to Medellin. Before the pandemic, there were also direct flights to Boston from both of these cities, but right now they have cut the flights. They might return by the time of the wedding.&nbsp; Typical Price Range:From New York to Medellin/Bogota: $400-800. Anything under $500 is an excellent price. $500-600 is quite normal. $600-800 is a little on the expensive side, and over $800 is ridiculous - I would advise waiting. Also, flights from Miami or Fort Lauderdale to Medellin are often around $300 dollars round trip.&nbsp;

Hotels

We are recommending two hotels for your stay that are both located centrally and conveniently in the neighborhood of Poblado.&nbsp; There are of course other options such as AirBnB or you could also choose to stay near the home of the brides in Santa Elena. This is also considered a five star hotel as well, but it is not as boujie as the Dann Carleton. This is a great option for those who want something a little more affordable, that's slightly more adventurous:) The two hotels are a five minute walk from one another, so it will be easy to meet up with other guests.&nbsp; The Masaya Medellin can be booked online for our wedding dates immediately; that said, the prices come down a lot if you wait. For example, right now the hotel is around 50 usd a night for the next couple months. If you look ahead to June, it goes up closer to 85 usd. So it might be wise to wait a bit to book your accommodations.

Transportation

To/from airport:The easiest way to get to and from the airport is by taxi. A typical taxi to Poblado neighborhood from the airport is 80,000 pesos (aprox. 20 dollars). It takes around 30 minutes and goes through a long tunnel. We recommend coordinating a taxi ride ahead of time to ease your arrival. Aurelio is a trusted driver who has worked with us previously. You can message him via WhatsApp in the weeks before arrival to coordinate. He speaks some English and if he is unable to pick you up, he will help arrange someone trusted who can. This is his WhatsApp contact number: +57-312-780-7944. There are also busses and shared taxis available. If you want to know more about these options, please contact us. To/from the wedding and next-day BBQ:We will provide transportation from Poblado to these events. More details will follow about pick-up time and location (most likely from the hotel).&nbsp; Renting a car:If you feel comfortable with your driving skills and ready to take on a challenge, you can rent a car here in Medellin for approximately $35 a day. Keep in mind that it is a bit challenging if you have never driven outside of your home country and most cars are manual. Automatic cars are typically available for a bit more cost. Getting around the city:Many points of interest around the city will be walkable, such as restaurants, bars, and parks. If you would like to explore more around the city, we suggest using the metro or taxis, as they are easy to navigate and affordable. -- Metro: You can see a map of the metro here. Cards can be purchased at the stations before entering. -- Taxis: Popular taxi apps that we recommend downloading ahead of time are Didi and Uber, in order to request and put in your destination without needing Spanish. Drivers will likely request you to sit in the front seat. This is normal here, so do not be alarmed. Cabify is another popular app, though you would need cash (Colombian pesos) for this. It is possible to hail yellow cabs on the street, but it is not recommended. It is preferable to use the apps or ask a restaurant/security guard to call you a cab. You can say "Taxi por favor?".&nbsp; Travel to other cities: If you would like to travel to another city such as Cartagena or Bogota, we strongly suggest domestic flights which are quite affordable.

Weather

Medellin is known as "The City of the Eternal Spring". That said, the weather is pretty lovely. It is important to remember when packing clothes that rain in frequent in Medellin and Colombia in general. Although June does not fall in the rainy season, there is almost a 50% chance of rain each day. That said, it will often rain for 30 minutes, clear up, and then be sunny again. If you plan to extend your trip by going to the coast, it will be significantly hotter. If you want to stay or visit other mountainous areas, it could likely be chillier, similar to Rionegro or Santa Elena.

Cultural Tips to Succeed in Colombia

WhatsApp: If you do not have this app, please download it before coming so you can set it up with your phone number. It is widely used here for messaging and phone/video calls via wifi, and it will make your international communication much easier. Greetings: Before Covid, all Colombians greeted with a kiss on the cheek for women-women and women-men. Men-men usually shook hands. Now, it is all up in the air about how to greet. Sometimes we elbow bump. Gringos (a term for foreigners) tend to come off a little cold. It is customary to ask Colombians how they are, how is their family, and so on before engaging in other discussions. Hygiene: Colombians are extremely clean. They do not leave the house without showering, and they brush their teeth three times a day (at least). Bathrooms: It is not customary to flush ANY paper products down the toilet, including toilet paper, as the pipes are more sensitive than North America. You should throw all paper waste products (including toilet paper) into the waste bin. Flip-Flops: No Colombian would wear flip-flops outside their house or a beach. This is the number one way to bring attention to yourself as a gringo, so just something to keep in mind. Shoes: It is very atypical and considered bad manners for Colombians to take their shoes off at a wedding reception. If you think your heels might get the better of you by 2 am, bring some cute flats to slip your feet into so you can keep on dancing. Clothes: Despite the weather often being warm (think spring time in New England), Colombians would only wear shorts to workout or to the beach. Just another thing to keep in mind if you would like to blend in at all. Taxi etiquette: Do not shut the door with force. This is the number one way we are scolded as gringos- slamming taxi doors. They might even jump over the seat to try to prevent our inevitable slam. Try to close their (much lighter) doors with a soft push. They will greatly appreciate it. Tipping: Tipping is not a cultural norm in Colombia. However, in formal restaurants, they will often ask if you would the "servicio" (tip) included. This is always a flat rate of 10% and it is not expected that you give more, unless you are feeling generous. You do not need to tip a taxi driver - it is neither normal nor expected. The minimum charge is 5,500 pesos (less than $2), so if you happen to take an extremely short ride, your fare might show lower than this on the taxi meter, but they will charge you the minimum so be prepared for that.

Food

Food in Medellin is a farmer's diet developed for a simple palate. It revolves around beans, rice, and meat.The most famous dish in Medellin is Bandeja Paisa, which consists of beans, rice, several kinds of meat, a fried egg, french fries, a small side salad, and a fried or grilled plantain (sweet banana). Other popular dishes (especially popular with gringos) are Sancocho, which is like a supersized chicken soup, and Ajiaco, which is also a soup with chicken, but it is thicker and served with capers. Both are delicious. We also recommend you try empanadas (a small, moon-shaped fried dough filled with different things), palito de queso (dough and cheese stick), and mango biche (a sour mango often served with salt and pepper). Feeling thirsty? Try the wide variety of tropical juices (lulo, maracuya, pineapple, mango, blackberry, etc), , different flavored lemonades (especially "limonada de coco"), guarapo (sugar cane drink), and the local liquor called "aguardiente" or a rum such as Ron Medellín. If you are looking for spicy food, Medellin is NOT the spot for that - bring your own hot sauce! (or ask for ají - a slightly spicy sauce often available by request).
