Emily and Elijah first met at Indiana Wesleyan University. It was the beginning of Emily’s senior year and Elijah’s sophomore year. Both were preparing for a new swim season and a fresh set of classes, though they barely knew each other despite swimming on the IWU team together the year before. That changed during the second week of school when Emily noticed Elijah sitting at McConn Coffee Co.—the place that would later become their spot for late nights of studying, laughing, and sharing avalanches. With a smile, she approached his table and teased, “There’s nowhere to sit around here.” Smooth, right? Elijah quickly put away his books and offered her a seat. The following week, Elijah made his big move. One night while they were studying in McConn, he asked if he could walk Emily back to her dorm. That walk turned into hours of conversation outside North Lodge—until 2 AM. The next night, they did the same. And the next. Before long, Elijah asked Emily out on their first official date. On September 15th, Elijah picked her up in his trusty 2010 Jeep Liberty and took her to the movies. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the strangest film either of them had ever seen—but it didn’t matter. What mattered was being together. Just a few weeks later, Elijah and Emily became “official,” and not long after, they declared their love for one another. As they say, when you know, you know. Months later, certain of their future together, Elijah asked Emily’s dad for his blessing to marry her. With his joyful yes, Elijah bought the ring and began planning the proposal. On August 10th, 2025, on Estero Island, Florida, with the waves crashing and the rain pouring down, Elijah got down on one knee and asked Emily to be his wife. And through the laughter, tears, and raindrops, she said yes.
