Springfield, Ohio – Information for Visitors
There are many sites within an hour’s drive of Springfield, including several within the National Aviation Heritage Area. Please check online to be sure a site is open during the hours listed here!
Built in 1908, this is the only Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie House in Ohio. The original family lived there for only 15 years, then it was broken up into apartments. It languished until the late 1990s when it was purchased by the Chicago-based Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. It took five years and over $6 million to fully restore the house, garage, and gardens, completed in 2005. Open daily except holidays, but advance ticket purchase for the 90-min tour is highly recommended. $17-20.
The Clark County Historical Society’s Heritage Center features a museum of local history within in the historic City Building. Open Fri 9-4 and Sat 9-3; suggested donation $2-5.
The adjacent COhatch Market features a historic indoor court of local shops and restaurants.
This unusual folk art installation was designed and built by local artist by Ben Hartman. From 1932 to 1944 he used pebbles, concrete, and other materials to build a miniature wonderland of structures and figures. In 2008 Wisconsin’s prestigious Kohler foundation purchased the property to facilitate its preservation and availability to the public. Open daily dawn to dusk. Donations accepted online or on site.
Most locals would probably consider this the premier tour destination in the region. Huge museum of military aviation including the Presidential Gallery that features four historic Air Force One planes. Open daily 9-5, free.
This is actually a group of six historic sites, mostly related to early aviation. The only remaining Wright Cycle Shop is one. See details online.
A small but worthwhile military aviation museum built around a WW II B-17 that the community has been restoring for over a decade. Open Tues – Sat 10-4. Admission free.
A traditional cafe with excellent homemade pie. Both indoor and outdoor seats have a view of the airfield where small planes land and take off, especially on weekends. Open Fri and Sat 7am-8pm, Sun 8am-2:30.
The first few blocks of the main road going east from downtown has many lovely old pre- and post-Civil War homes of different architectural styles. A short drive or pleasant walk.
Urbana (25 min). Indoor and outdoor seating on the town square and features Spanish and Portuguese wines and tapas. Open Fri 3-10, Sat noon-10, Sun 11-4.
Located in scenic rolling country near the highest point in Ohio. Ohio Caverns is not large but has exceptionally beautiful calcite formations. Open 9-5, guided tours $12-24.
A beautifully restored town square lined by nineteenth century buildings that have been repurposed for a variety of businesses. Fun places to visit include: Haren’s Market, Olive Oasis, Crafted&Cured, Bakehouse Bread Cookie Co., Agave and Rye, Moeller Brew Barn, and the Miami County Courthouse.
Home of the oldest operating copper stills in North America. Located on a registered Ohio Historic Family Farm in the same family since the early 1800s. Be sure to take the route through the town of New Carlisle to enjoy a scenic drive on country back roads. Open Fri 12-5, Sat 12-7. Tour/tasting $20, reservation suggested.
Best known for it’s prize-winning holiday light display, the historic mill on the Little Miami River gorge was built in 1802. The mill is still operated by water power and produces flour for sale in the gift shop. On weekdays it’s possible to arrange a tour of the workings by calling ahead (937-767-5501); $5. Restaurant and store open Sat and Sun 8-4, all other days 9-3.
From the parking lot of this state park, it’s just a short walk to an intimate but scenic gorge of the Little Miami River. There are trails along the rim as well as down into the gorge. The trails connect to adjacent John Bryan State Park.
