Q + A

How should I RSVP? When should I RSVP?

You can RSVP right on this website! Kindly RSVP by April 14th, 2025, as the final head count is due to the venue by this day. Please make sure to RSVP in time, as the venue will not allow additional guests past the RSVP date and we don't want you to miss our wedding!

Can I bring a plus one?

Due to limited venue capacity, we kindly request that invitations be honored as addressed. All guests in your party will be listed on your RSVP. We want everyone to share in the celebration and will ensure folks will be around familiar and friendly company. We appreciate your understanding!

Can I bring my kids?

We love little ones - however, we have decided to keep our wedding and reception an adults-only event with the exception of children in our wedding party and immediate family. If you are unsure if your children are invited, when you RSVP, they will be listed as guests in your party. We encourage you to use this evening to have a fun date night!

What is the dress code?

The dress code is cocktail to semi-formal. This means that suits and formal dresses are welcome, and so are cocktail dresses and a shirt and tie. No jeans or t-shirts, please! Here's a link to explain different dress codes: https://www.brides.com/story/wedding-dress-code-explained

Is there a hotel room block?

Yes! We have booked a block at the Home2 Suites and the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Aberdeen, Maryland. Please see the travel section of the website for more information!

What is the parking situation going to be? What are my transportation options?

There will be plenty of parking spots available at the Vandiver Inn! There is a parking lot right next to the venue, as well as ample street parking. We DO NOT want any of our guests drinking and driving. The Vandiver Inn allows guests to leave their vehicles overnight at the venue and pick them up the next morning by 12:00 pm (noon). We also encourage Uber, Lyft, or taxis if you have been drinking. If you are staying at the Home2 Suites or the Fairfield Inn & Suites, there will also be a shuttle that will run back and forth between the hotels and the Vandiver Inn from 2:00 - 10:00. We want everyone to be able to relax and have a few drinks without worrying about driving home! The shuttle will remain available throughout the entire wedding, in case you need to leave early or make a quick trip back to your room. We hope this eases your worries about transportation!

What is the wedding day itinerary?

The wedding ceremony will begin promptly at 3:00 pm. It will be followed by family pictures and cocktail hour until 4:30. Dinner will begin around 5:00, and be immediately followed by the reception. The reception will end at 9:00, with a bubble send-off! We'll also have an after-party at Coakley's in downtown Havre de Grace, for those who want to keep the celebration going!

Can I take photos at your ceremony?

We would love for you to be present in the moment and really enjoy the ceremony without your phones and cameras! We have an amazing photographer who will be capturing the ceremony, and we will be sharing those photos on social media after the wedding. As such, we kindly ask that you refrain from taking any photos during the ceremony. However, please feel free to take as many photos as you want during cocktail hour and the reception!! We will even have a QR code to scan to upload your photos to a shared album so we can see the night through your eyes!

What do I do if I'm late for the ceremony?

If you are late for the ceremony, we kindly ask that you wait until the recessional to enter! Please be advised that the ceremony will start promptly at 3:00 pm. So, we recommend you shoot for a 2:00 - 2:45 arrival time so you have time to mingle, find a seat, and grab a program. At 3:00 the doors will be closed and you will be unable to attend the actual ceremony. This will be strictly enforced. You will still be allowed to attend the reception - we just want to minimize distractions. Hang out in the air condition, and we will see you at the reception! Thank you so much for your understanding!

Is the seating random?

For the ceremony, sit wherever you'd like. However, we will be carefully arranging dinner tables for our guests to sit with those they know. There will be a welcome sign with the tables listed. We know weddings are a mixing pot of guests who may not know one another, and we want to ease any anxieties for those who may be a bit more introverted!

Will there be alcohol served?

Yes! There will be an open bar with a wide selection of beer, wine, and mid to upper-shelf liquor. The Vandiver Inn has a strict no-BYOB policy, so we encourage you to take advantage of the open bar! Please do not drink and drive! We have plenty of transportation options for any of our guests who are drinking.

What are the venue's rules on smoking?

The Vandiver Inn has a designated smoking section outside of where the ceremony is held near the parking lot side of the garden. For directions to the smoking area please ask staff upon arrival. Please be advised that there is a strict no-smoking policy outside of designated smoking areas.

Will the bride/groom be changing their last name?

Both the bride and groom have chosen to keep their last names. Emily will remain Emily Scanlon, and James will remain James Howard.

I have a question that wasn't answered - what is the best way to reach Emily and James?

Please reach out to either James or Emily by text or Facebook Messenger for any additional questions :)
