Our Wedding

I first met Emily during a medical school interview.We were hungry, inexperienced, and ambitious students yearning to become doctors, and it’s fair to say we were focused first and foremost on this pursuit. That didn’t stop me from making a sly comment about San Antonio when I heard Emily, a proud Austin native, talk about MY city. But alas, we were too busy knocking on future’s door to notice. Until that is, a week later when we locked eyes at ANOTHER medical school interview. I was stunned, both by the statistical impossibility and those charming blue eyes that invited me closer. Years of anguishing toil studying, working in clinics, preparing for interviews suddenly faded to the background as we lost ourselves in conversation. To this day I remember essentially nothing from the interviews or the various characteristics of that particular school, really all I could think about was her. Gravity had intensified, time had slowed to a swirl, and the forces of the universe aligned. Even Emily’s mother wasn’t readily available to pick her up, and I of course took the opportunity to take her to a trendy coffee shop and get lost in her words. Finally it was time to go; I felt a longing pull as we hugged. And well, the rest is history. --Armando S. Martinez
