Matt and Emma met on June 25, 2022, at Sand Cove, a charming little reservoir in Dammeron Valley, Utah. Both were there with their respective friends, soaking up the sun and enjoying the day. Matt's lively German Shepherd, Theya, decided to play matchmaker and bounded over to Emma's group, sparking a conversation between the two parties.
As they chatted away, standing in the sharp rocks by the water, Emma decided to test the musical waters. She strategically sat down on a rock and declared, "I'm over here in the rock 'n' roll club!" hoping to see if Matt shared her love for rock music. Matt's eyes lit up and he shot back, "Oh yeah? What do you know about rock and roll?"
With a sly smile, Emma replied, "Old or new?"
"Old," Matt said confidently.
Emma began to list off bands like Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica, and Motley Crue, and that's when Matt knew he was in trouble—head over heels kind of trouble. He was so impressed that he whipped out his phone to show Emma videos of him shredding some of her favorite Metallica songs on his electric guitar. Emma thought it was pretty freaking cool.
Before the day ended, Matt made sure to get Emma's phone number. They agreed they could be "concert buddies" or she could be his "Northern Utah field guide" since Emma lived up north in Provo and Matt was from down south in Veyo. Emma and her friend even went back to Matt's place to check out the tiny home he was building, which only added to Emma's amazement.
That night, Matt couldn't resist texting Emma and asking her on a date. Emma's response?
"What time :)"
And so began their rock 'n' roll love story.
The day after they met, Matt and Emma set up a date for that afternoon. Matt chose one of Emma's favorite spots in St. George: George's Corner. He picked her up in his Honda Civic Si, a manual car, which Emma definitely knew she didn't know how to drive.
They chatted about cars while waiting to be seated, and Matt joked about putting screws in tires for winter studs. Emma, genuinely curious, asked, "Oh really?" to which Matt laughed and said, "Hahahahaha no, don't do that..." Emma thought to herself, "Dumb blonde moment, and we're only a few minutes into this date!"
At the restaurant, they found themselves lost in conversation. They talked about their aspirations, dreams, and life goals, discovering just how much they aligned on the important things. Emma couldn't help but think, "Dang, Matt is super cute."
After dinner, Matt had a cute surprise for Emma. He took her hand and showed her how to shift gears in his Honda Civic. As they shifted the gears together, it was also a sweet excuse for him to hold her hand. Emma, still a little shy, found it both adorable and endearing.
The adventure continued at Pioneer Park. They climbed around the rocks and listened to some rock 'n' roll music. Matt introduced Emma to Greta Van Fleet, playing "Light My Love." Emma hadn't heard it before, but she loved discovering new music with Matt. While listening to other rock and roll songs, Emma sang along, and Matt found he really liked the sound of her voice, even if she was a bit self-conscious about it.
As the night grew late, neither wanted the date to end. They decided to get McDonald's ice cream, but, unsurprisingly, the machine was down. Undeterred, they headed to In-N-Out for some shakes instead. The evening ended with a tight hug at the doorstep, both of them feeling butterflies in their stomachs and thinking this might be the start of something special.
For their second date on June 27, 2022, Matt decided to surprise Emma with a motorcycle adventure. He picked her up on his bike, and though Emma was a bit scared, she held onto Matt tight, which neither of them minded. They rode to a park where they sat in the grass, enjoying the summer day.
Matt, always full of surprises, suggested a guessing game. He asked Emma if she could guess his last name, giving her a hint by pointing to the roads around them. Emma furrowed her brow and ventured, "Asphalt?" Matt burst out laughing and said, "You think my name is Matthew Asphalt?" Emma, a bit flustered, replied, "Well, you pointed to the road!" Matt chuckled and asked, "What’s another name for those roads?" After a moment, Emma said, "A street?" Matt smiled and said, "Yes, my last name is Streeter."
After the guessing game, Matt showed Emma some Krav Maga self-defense moves he had been learning. Emma was impressed and enjoyed the playful and protective side of Matt. They left the park and zipped around town, ending up at Vernon Worthen Park in St. George later that night. Sitting in the grass together, they talked and shared stories, getting lost in each other's company.
As they sat there, Matt looked into Emma's eyes, and she knew what was coming. Emma had some mental rules: she never kissed on the first date and was hesitant to kiss on the second because that felt too soon, right? But as Matt leaned in, Emma found herself leaning in too. And then, boom, they shared their first kiss. All of Emma's rules melted away in that perfect moment.
On the evening of July 6, 2022, around 5 pm, Emma was at home in Provo, while Matt was in St. George. Out of the blue, Matt texted Emma asking her to guess what was on the menu. Emma replied, "What?" Matt responded with, "The best gluten-free chicken Alfredo you could ever have."
Emma was confused because Matt had mentioned he would start making it after his Krav Maga class, and he was all the way in St. George. When Matt said he would door dash it, Emma thought that was too expensive. Then Matt dropped the surprise: he told her he was the door dasher. He planned to drive up and bring her the pasta himself.
Emma, shocked and a bit concerned, pointed out that it was a four-hour drive and too long. She felt bad about him making such a trip. But Matt was determined. Emma thought he was crazy; he wouldn't get there until 9:30 or 10 pm. Despite her doubts, she gave him her address, still thinking he might be joking. But Matt wasn’t. He confirmed he was on his way, and Emma started to frantically clean her room.
Emma's mom walked in and saw the whirlwind of cleaning. "Oh, is someone special coming over?" she asked. Emma told her that Matt was driving all the way from St. George to make her pasta. This gesture was so sweet and surprising—no one had ever done something like this for her.
And so, Matt embarked on the crazy, spontaneous trip to see Emma. When he arrived, pasta in hand, it marked the beginning of many more unforgettable moments together.
Matthew secretly coordinated with their friend Shay, who also happened to be their favorite photographer, for a stylized photoshoot that would double as a proposal. Since Emma and Matt had modeled for stylized photoshoots before, Emma didn't suspect a thing. Shay reached out to Emma, asking if she and Matt could model for her shoot at the Salt Flats. Emma asked Matt, who agreed, and she said yes. Shay even let Emma pick a beautiful dress from a selection for the occasion.
On the day of the shoot, they woke up extra early—around 4 am—to get ready for a sunrise session. Emma was still completely unaware of what was about to happen. When they arrived, Shay began taking photos of Emma and Matt. Then Shay suggested playing some music and asked if they had a favorite song. They chose "Light My Love" by Greta Van Fleet.
Shay then asked Emma to walk a few feet away and face the sun to capture some solo shots and adjust her camera settings. While Emma was facing the sunrise, Matt came up behind her and gently kissed her shoulder. When Emma turned around, she saw Matt on one knee, holding a beautiful rose ring box that flipped open to reveal the most perfect salt-and-pepper diamond ring.
With tears in his eyes, Matt asked Emma to marry him, and she joyfully said yes. After the emotional moment, Emma playfully asked, "Did you ask my dad?" Matt laughed, remembering that his mom had asked his dad the same question when he proposed to her, making the moment even more memorable.
