Chen first approached Emma during their freshman year of college in the Honors dorm at Purdue. They got to talking and Emma gave Chen her Snapchat just before she had to bike back to her apartment. She claimed that she wanted to be 'just friends', but quickly fell in love and they began dating officially on November 17th, 2018.

They moved into an apartment together with Emma's beloved cat Tigger for their third year of college. Chen is now a cat person.

After stating that she did not want to be engaged until she graduated (to not be distracted with ideas of a wedding during school), she caved and decided it wouldn't be so bad. Chen proposed on December 20th, 2021 during a cruise that Emma had planned as an anniversary and birthday gift to Chen.

They decided to wait to get married until Chen graduated in May of 2024 so they could enjoy being engaged for a while and Chen wouldn't have to worry about studying for his pharmacy board exams. They are incredibly excited to have all their favorite people together and celebrate their official union!
