Two tribes. One union. Pure celebration. Our love story is more than just two people coming together — it’s the merging of two rich, proud, and deeply rooted cultures: the Ijaw people of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and the Dagaati people of Wa, Ghana. Here’s a little cultural cheat sheet to get you wedding-ready:

Traditional attire

Wa (Ghana)The Dagaati people wear smocks (batakari/fugu), often handwoven and patterned with earthy tones. Women may wear colorful cloth wrapped gracefully, sometimes with beads or shawls. Style is simple, dignified, and regal. Ijaw (Nigeria)Expect vibrant George fabric wrappers, detailed lace blouses, and bold head ties (gele) for women. Men wear flowing wrappers, embroidered shirts, bowler hats, walking sticks, and layers of coral beads — true Niger Delta elegance. 💡 Tip: Come dressed to slay and show respect — this isn’t just fashion, it’s culture.

🍛 Food

Ghanaian Dishes:Northern Ghana is known for Tuo Zaafi (TZ) with light soup or green leaf stew, guinea fowl, millet-based meals, and dishes flavored with dawadawa. Let’s not forget the popular ghana jollof (yes, it’s a thing), waakye, banku, shito, fufu and peanut soup, etc. Ghanaian food is earthy, rich, and unforgettable. Nigerian Delights:Get ready for fisherman soup, pepper soup, starch, plantain, and plenty seafood. Bold spices, river flavors, and finger-licking goodness. 💡 Tip: Come hungry and ready for round two.

🎶 Music & dance

Ijaw Sounds:Live drums, traditional songs, and sometimes highlife music set the tone. Dances are graceful and grounded, with lots of clapping and call-and-response singing. Don’t be surprised if the bride dances in escorted by friends or sisters. Dagaati Rhythms:Expect drums, xylophones, and Northern Ghanaian instruments like the gungon (talking drum). Jera or Bamaya dances may feature — with rhythm, footwork, and cultural storytelling. 💡 Tip: Don’t sit still when the drums come out. Whether it’s azonto, gbese, or a slow cultural shuffle — just move!

🕺🏾Dance floor etiquettte

No wallflowers allowed. When the music drops (Afrobeats, Highlife, Hiplife, Gospel), you’re expected to dance—even if it’s just shoulder bouncing. Traditional music like Talking Drum (Yoruba) or Adowa (Ghana) might make an appearance too. 💡 Tip: Practice your “gbese,” “legwork”, “alkayida,” and “azonto.” You’ll thank us later.
