When I first came across Alex's profile on Hinge profile, it was 6:40am on a Saturday. I still have no idea why I was awake. Looking through Alex's profile, I noticed he was tall, older than me, and incredibly attractive. His answer to the most spontaneous thing he'd ever done was quit [his] cube job and went to Cozumel to be a SCUBA instructor. I was intrigued!
I reached out first (which will surprise absolutely no one) and asked him why he decided to go to law school, and he said I chose law school to be a lawyer. At that moment, I knew he was the smart ass I needed.
Our first date was at Island Park in Ann Arbor, which appeared grey and desolate in Google Maps. I figured the date would either go really well or he was a murderer and would toss my body in the Huron River. I told a few friends where I was going, sent screenshots of his profile, shared my location, and took my dog Skittles with me. If he was going to kill me, he had to be heartless enough to meet Skittles and knowingly leave her orphaned (impossible).
Alex brought snacks - peppers, carrots, hummus, and, my favorite, green tea with honey. We talked for what seemed like hours. He told me about his family’s turkey farms, starting his own company in college (and selling it), working for Apple, living in Cozumel… it sounded so fantastical. A bit too good to be true. When I got home, I obviously got to work figuring out exactly how much of what he said was true. Could I find evidence of his company or his family’s turkey farm?
(He’s still working on it ;) )
