Your typical millennial meet-cute:

Erika was just about to give up on dating apps, but then she woke up on a Friday morning in May and she had a notification on Hinge from a girl named Jozlin. Joz didn’t write anything, just simply “liked” the prompt Erika completed: “I want someone who…Knows what they’re looking for and aren’t afraid to communicate it.” Erika scrolled through Joz’s profile, multiple things catching her eye, including pictures of her with her family and playing golf. Erika quickly knew this is a girl she wanted to get to know, so she sent her a message that said “Have you gotten to play yet this year?” They hit it off texting throughout the weekend and made plans to go on a date just a week later.

The date that went on...and on...

Erika suggested golfing for their first date, so they met at the driving range at Maple Hill. Joz was early, having already set up a basket of balls for each of them by the time Erika arrived 15 minutes late. Much to Joz’s surprise, Erika was not as good at golf as she thought she’d be, considering that’s how she started their initial conversation, and then suggested it for the date. However, Erika was also surprised that Joz was VERY good at golf. In true lesbian fashion, their first date lasted six hours. After getting lunch, Erika said “I don’t have anything I need to get home for…”, so they went to a brewery and talked on the patio. Then they went to a park and walked around before finding a bench to sit on and talk more. While they were at the park, Joz’s sister and mom were texting and calling her to see how things went – Erika told her to let them know she was still on the date!

Making lesbian stereotypes ring true:

Throughout that summer, Joz and Erika were together as often as they could be. They spent time cooking together, going on ice cream dates, taking Scarlett on long walks around Ada, doing projects at Erika’s house, and obviously more games of golf. It wasn’t long before families were involved…in July Erika spent a few days with the Johnsons for their summer vacation, and Joz joined the Dvorak family up north for their annual Lake City family party. As Summer turned into Fall and Joz’s lease in Ada was almost up, they made a U-Haul reservation and Joz moved to Holland.

A forever thing:

It didn’t take long before the two of them would catch each other making references to things far in the future and they realized what people mean when they say, “when you know, you know.” After ring shopping in the Fall, Joz told Erika she would propose sometime before their trip to Hawaii in April, which Erika thought was a reasonable timeline. Erika and Joz were in Rochester to celebrate the holidays and meet the new Dvorak twins, who were born the day after Christmas. Since the twins were in the hospital for a week, Erika and her sister, Anna, made some snacks and meals for the new family of four. On New Year's Eve, Anna and Erika made a trip to Costco for last minute snacks for the night, and stopped by Savannah and Ian’s house to stock their fridge. On the way home, Anna was texting with Joz and the notifications kept popping up on the screen – Anna said Joz knew Erika would be driving, so texted her to know when they’d be home. Weird excuse, but Erika let it go. Shortly thereafter they pulled in the driveway and began unloading the car. Joz came out and told Erika not to worry about it, and took her purse and coat and gave them to Anna to take inside. Erika started thinking maybe this was the moment, but surely it couldn’t be because it was “too soon,” right? Instead of going inside, Joz led Erika around the outside of the house, and as they walked around the corner, Erika already started crying – near the edge of her parent’s backyard, Joz led Erika to set up of a trellis lit with Christmas lights, candles, and rose petals. While snow lightly fell, Joz shared heartfelt words and got down on one knee to slide a ring on Erika’s finger. As they embraced, their families came running out to celebrate, drinks in hand (so that’s why they didn’t walk through the house!). Joz had planned to have her family join for the occasion, as well as a photographer – no wonder everyone was pushing to get Anna and Erika out of the house to run errands! They all spent New Year’s Eve together -- the perfect way to ring in 2025 and celebrate the beginning of Joz and Erika joining their lives together.
