As many 21st century love stories begin, theirs began on an (unnamed) app during the summer of 2018. Jani swiped right on a grad student with just the right amount of RBF, and Erin swiped right on a self-proclaimed “hippie” in a flight suit.

Their first date wasn’t necessarily love at first sight, but it was curiosity at first sight. Jani gently reminded Erin to bring an umbrella and met her at one of his favorite restaurants, Cheu. Jani, not realizing Erin’s cheese aversion, ordered crab rangoons, and Erin ate a polite 3 bites before revealing her truth. Although he couldn’t tell if she was having a good time, Jani, never one to turn down a challenge, asked Erin, never one to be anything other than a challenge, on a second date, and she said yes! It took another two dates of Erin insisting, but perhaps not emoting, she was having a good time before Jani believed her.

They bonded quickly over their shared love of cooking and eating. Erin made weekly bread to satisfy Jani’s cravings, and Jani withheld his family recipes until he was sure she could be trusted. Recipes in hand and careful instruction from Jani’s parents secured, Erin switched from baking bread to perfecting her dosa because Jani deserves to have it all.

In each other, Jani and Erin have found trust, unwavering support, and mischief (before 9pm). Luckily, their families also approved of the match. Jani’s family took to Erin’s quick wit and candor. Likewise, Erin’s family fell for Jani’s light-hearted charisma.

In the years since, Jani and Erin have built a life together. They moved into their first home together in South Philly, cared for an elderly Sadie, survived Jani’s graduate degrees, intend to survive Erin’s graduate degree, been to countless dinners and concerts together, and built a shared network of family and friends. Together with their families, they are delighted to invite you to celebrate their partnership in April 2024!
