Our engagement story actually begins way back in 2018 with a little movie you might have heard of called Mamma Mia. I (the bride) introduced Jacob to my all-time favorite movie, and over the years, he’s been forced to watch it more times than anyone should reasonably endure. But while I was swooning over the songs and the stunning scenery, Jacob was paying attention to something else entirely how much I lit up whenever Greece appeared on screen. From the very beginning, he knew it was a place I dreamed of seeing one day. A year into our relationship, after a particularly emotional night watching A Star is Born (yes, that movie, yes the one that leaves you in emotional pieces), Jacob surprised me with a promise ring. Years later, sitting in a tiny, no-frills taco shop, I asked him what made him give me the ring that night. He told me that movie made him realize he couldn’t imagine life without me. When I looked up from my taco, there he was crying in public. Over tacos. Adorable, right?For the next few years of our relationship, anytime I mentioned something about weddings, engagement rings, or future dreams, Jacob quietly opened the Notes app on his phone and started documenting it all every wish, every hint, every little detail.Fast forward to 2023. We were heading out on a Mediterranean cruise with both of our parents, and one of the stops just so happened to be Santorini, Greece. Cue: my excitement hitting historic levels. On the morning we arrived, Jacob told me he’d booked us a visit to an infinity pool on a hill overlooking the island. He even told me what to wear which, in hindsight, should’ve tipped me off, because he never does that. But I was way too excited to notice.While our parents took a bus to a beach, Jacob and I set off on our own to find this magical pool. Here’s where things got... real. It was 95 degrees. Our GPS didn’t work. We don’t speak Greek. So we were two sweaty, lost Americans wandering the hills of Santorini for over an hour. At one point, hot, tired, and deeply confused, I suggested we call it and head back to the town center. But Jacob insisted we keep going.Eventually, we stopped at a stunning lookout to rest and take in the view, or so I thought. Naturally, we had to take a selfie. A kind man nearby offered to take our photo, and we gratefully accepted. The next thing I knew, he was expertly posing us and using a professional camera. I still had no clue what was happening until I turned around and saw Jacob… down on one knee.That "kind stranger"? A professional photographer Jacob had hired to capture the whole proposal.The next hour was a blur of laughter, happy tears, and a dreamy engagement photoshoot among the white washed buildings of Santorini. As if the day couldn’t get any more perfect, when we made our way back to the city center, our parents popped out of a corner, cheering and hugging us they’d been in on the surprise all along.It was everything I ever dreamed of: romantic, thoughtful, and deeply personal. But then again, that’s Jacob he has a way of turning dreams into real life memories. And somehow, he still manages to surprise me with how much love he brings into my life, every single day.
