On the second day of freshman year, Ethan and his friends from the west campus came over to the main campus to play volleyball because the volleyball net from the west campus was taken to the main. While playing volleyball Bethany and her roommates and Ethan and his friends met and decided to stay after to keep playing volleyball once everyone left. They exchanged contact information, and this became a nightly occurrence.

Ethan decided to ask Bethany if she wanted to go and get frozen yogurt from Nate and Ally's one day. Bethany was under the impression that he had invited the group and was surprised when she realized it was just the two of them. They talked for 3 hours just about life and got to know each other until one of Bethany's roommates asked her if she was still alive because they had not heard anything from her. At that point, the two of them realized just how much time they had spent talking. About two weeks after their first date and countless hours of spending time together Ethan asked Bethany to be his girlfriend.

Throughout the 4 years of college, Ethan and Bethany ended up playing multiple intramural sports, going on three spring break trips, and countless other dates to pizza farms, wineries, and Nate and Ally's. When they were not tied up with school they would go hammocking, hiking, disc golfing, golfing, wine and movie nights, and game nights.

Ethan finally proposed on the day before their three year anniversary. He had gotten both sets of families to come to Winona to surprise Bethany. They stopped to get paninis for their date at the park and Ethan rotated to not have the sun in his eyes right as Bethany's best friend showed up to take pictures. She laughed at him and they both turned to look at her friend before he proposed. After all photos were taken Ethan had another surprise for Bethany waiting at his house. He had enlisted the help of his roommates and friends to set up a surprise engagement party which was a great success.
