The house designed and built by Edith Wharton! The gardens and grounds are free and open daily.
Explore the town of Hudson! Hudson is a quintessential upstate New York town filled with cool boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and bakeries. Hudson's Warren Street was labeled a "shopper's dream" by Vogue and is chalk full of antique and vintage shops. Sean and Evelyn went here at the end of August and thought that Hudson was extremely charming and, indeed, something of a shopper's dream. They recommend going to Back Bar and getting a very solid lobster roll!
Explore over 60 works of contemporary sculpture spread across 300 acres of New York's rolling hills. The cafe is also supposed to be quite good.
The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.
There are a lot of hikes in the Berkshires and upstate New York! Mount Greylock is the highest point in the state of Massachusetts. There are several hiking trails, including a portion of the famous Appalachian trail. There's also a granite lighthouse in the park that people can visit.
If you want to learn more about the Shakers, the "shaking Quakers" who practiced celibacy, built beautiful wooden furniture, and engaged in radical egalitarianism throughout the 18th century, then visit the Hancock Shaker village!
We've also been told that there is a country fair at the Hancock Shaker village on the 28th and 29th-- how fortuitous! According to Hancock Shaker Village, "This year’s Country Fair includes live music, horse-drawn carriage rides, workshops and demonstrations, antique quilt show, farmer’s market, craft beer & cider, antique car show, a timber framing workshop, and dozens of craft vendors. And if you get hungry, Woodlife Kitchen will be onsite grilling chicken, burgers, & hotdogs and Great Cape Bakery will be making fresh cider donuts and other baked treats each day!"
Go apple picking! There's any number of farms in the area to choose from, this is just one.
Sean and Evelyn went here at the end of August and had a blast. You can rent two clubs, get a big bucket of balls, and a snack for $14. All skill levels are welcome.
