TRANSPORTATION QUESTIONS
Q | HOW DO WE GET TO THE HOTELS IN AMARES?
Amares is about a 45 minute drive North of Porto. We will be providing transportation from Porto to Amares on Monday, May 27th (time and location of pick up still TBD).
The shuttle will drop guests off at Pousada Mosteiro Amares (wedding venue location), Pousada Canicada Geres, and Agrinho Suites & Spa.
If you don't want this arranged transportation, no problem! You have the option to enjoy the 45 minute drive by rental car or Uber/taxi to your accommodations. If you would like to have your own transportation, we recommend renting a car from one of the major rental agencies (we've had great experiences with Enterprise & Avis) in Porto to have your own transportation to explore the surrounding area or travel on your own schedule.
You will be ale to RSVP for this bus transportation once formal invitations are sent out.
Q | HOW DO WE GET TO THE WEDDING IF WE'RE NOT STAYING AT THE VENUE?
We will be providing shuttles from the 2 hotels (Pousada Canicada Geres & Agrinho Suites & Spa) to the venue on the day/night of the wedding!
If you opt to stay at an Airbnb, we can provide taxi information so you can coordinate to get to & from the venue.
TRAVEL QUESTIONS
Q | DO WE NEED A PASSPORT?
YES! You will need a passport to get to Portugal + it must be valid! The U.S. Department of State is reporting extremely high passport application volumes. The estimated processing time is currently 10-14 weeks. If you need a new passport or will need to renew your passport before May 2024, please make sure to get your applications in soon!
Passport application information can be found here: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports.html
Q | WHERE SHOULD WE FLY INTO?
This is up to your preference :) The closest airport to the venue is Porto (Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport - OPO). However, if you plan to make a longer trip out of it, feel free to fly into Lisbon and make your way up north in time for the welcome party/wedding.
Q | WHEN SHOULD WE PLAN TO ARRIVE?
For guests traveling from outside of Portugal, we recommend arriving on or before Saturday, 5/25 (however, traveling on a weekday will almost half the price of your flight). This should give you enough time to adjust to the time difference before the wedding and gives you the opportunity to attend the welcome party on Sunday, 5/26.
PORTUGAL QUESTIONS
Q | WHAT IS THE WEATHER GOING TO BE LIKE?
The average high temp in Amares, Portugal in May is 70 degrees Fahrenheit, although they've had some heat waves in recent years up to 90 degrees. Wear something light and comfortable but bring layers for the evening as temperatures can drop to the 50s.
Q | WHAT IS THERE TO DO IN PORTUGAL?
Check the "Our Recommendations" tab for our favorite hotels, restaurants, bars, & attractions in all of Portugal!
Q| DO YOU RECOMMEND RENTING A CAR?
Yes! A car is a great and easy way to get around Portugal, especially if you want to see different parts of the country.
However, driving in some of these old towns, such as Lisbon and Porto, can be quite difficult and we would recommend that you leave the car in a garage/at hotel/at Airbnb during the duration of the stay and walk, Uber, or use public transportation.
Q | WHAT'S THE CURRENCY IN PORTUGAL?
The official currency of Portugal is the euro, which is abbreviated to EUR. You can either exchange your USD cash for euro before you leave at the airport or you can bring USD cash with you to exchange in Portugal at a local exchange at banks and exchange offices registered with Banco de Portugal. Most all establishments (restaurants, bars, shops, etc) will accept all major credit cards although, be sure to check if your credit and/or debit card charges a foreign transaction fee.
