Our Wedding

We met on the dating app, Hinge, a few days before Thanksgiving 2019. I remember thinking that Gabi was so much prettier than everyone else I had seen on the app up until that point. I thought she must have gotten her settings confused. But I messaged Gabi anyway about her interest in craft beers. I asked her what her favorite type of beer was, to which she replied, “Sours all the way!” and the rest is history.

How We Met!

After messaging back and forth for a few weeks we decided to have our first date on December 14, 2019. We met in Columbus so Gabi could show me her favorite places in the city. Gabi likes to hit the ground running, so I met her for breakfast at 10 am and we went all over the city for the next 13 hours. We started with breakfast at Skillet and then walking around the Book Loft. We then moved on to Platform Brewing (RIP) wherem we had our first kiss on the rooftop. She then drove me around the OSU campus (as a UC Bearcat, I had a hard time caring about any of that) and then onto Franklinton to look at art. We then had dinner at The Market (RIP). We ended the night watching Elf at Gabi’s apartment and Carmen licking the back of my neck. (I took that as a good sign).

Our First Date!

For a good portion of our relationship, we were long distance, with me in Cincinnati and Gabi in Columbus but we made sure we saw each other as much as we could. Weve done so many things together and have been fortunate enough to travel to so many interesting places together. In the fall of 2023, we decided to move in together in Columbus. We were there for about a year when Gabi got a new job in Dayton at Parker Hannifin. So, we decided to move to South Dayton and we bought our first home together in Kettering during the Winter of 2024.

Harry says in When Harry met Sally that “when you figure out when you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible”. I felt that way about Gabi very early in our relationship and after four years I thought it was about time to propose. My plan was to propose during the first night of our trip to Europe for Gabi’s 29th birthday. We were going on a Cruise of the Baltic Sea which started in Stockholm, Sweden, which I thought was a great place to do it. I bought Gabi an emerald ring and my plan was for us to have a nice dinner and to propose after. I booked us a table at a restaurant called Coco and Carmen where we had a delicious multi coursed pre-fixed meal. They sat us a tiny table in the literal window with a figurine of a married couple on the table (very subtle). But I was so nervous during the whole dinner that I read the reservation time wrong so we were almost late and I accidentally offended the waitress mid-dinner. (American humor doesn’t play well in Sweden-if looks could kill I would not have made it the rest of dinner). Afterwards we went for a walk on the completely empty streets. (It was seriously like ghost town, like where did all the people go). I was still so nervous and the ring was burning such a hole in my pocket, that I decided the best place to propose was on an absolutely pitch-black bridge called Ladugårdslandsviken, overlooking the canal (very pretty when they turn the streetlights on). Luckily for me, Gabi said yes! And when she finally could see the ring she loved it!

There are many hotels in the area of our wedding venue but we have not reserved a block of rooms due to the small size of our wedding. Below are some different options that you might be interested in booking. Make sure to reserve rooms early due to timing around the holidays. Airbnbs in the German Village area are also a great option for those traveling in larger groups with many options near the venue.
