It started in the summer of 2017 in Birmingham, Alabama. Ben from Kentucky and Grace from Florida - meeting by chance at a national debate tournament. At the time, it didn’t feel like the beginning of anything grand. It was just a conversation, sparked by shared opinions and good timing, one of those moments that could have easily passed like so many others. But it didn’t.When nationals ended, so did the expectation that they’d ever see each other again. They returned to their home states and moved on with their separate lives. Grace, however, had developed a little crush. So, during their senior year of high school, she reached out. Just a message to congratulate him on receiving his first bid at UK. What started as a shared interest in debate became the foundation of a friendship that felt unusually natural.Their mutual involvement in the world of debate became not merely a common pursuit but a means of aligning their otherwise separate lives. The more they talked, the more their connection grew. Calls turned into long car rides. And soon, weekends were spent trading state lines for time together.When the time came for college, they each pursued education in their home state; Ben remained in Kentucky and Grace in Florida. College, for all its demands, brought with it a certain freedom. For Ben and Grace, that meant spending nearly every free weekend on the road, driving the long stretch between Kentucky and Florida, simply to be together.By May of 2021, they had both graduated from college. With no more academic obligations separating them, they finally had the freedom to choose what came next. It was something they had dreamed about for years: living in the same state. They chose Raleigh, North Carolina, not only because it resided halfway between the places they once called home, but because it felt like a place they could grow into together.In October 2023, they took the next natural step and purchased their home, a space entirely their own. It wasn’t just a house; it was the beginning of something steady and shared.Not long after, on a winter day, Ben planned a date at Lake Johnson. As they walked the familiar trail, Ben paused at their favorite overlook. With Roxy in attendance and the lake behind them, he got down on one knee. With a few surprised “oh my goshes” and a smile she couldn’t contain, Grace gave the easiest “yes” of her life.It is a curious thought that what began as a youthful interest in debate, an activity rooted in disagreement, should evolve into a partnership so harmoniously. But such is the nature of love: it arises not always where we expect, but where it is quietly meant to be.Now, as Ben and Grace step into this new chapter, they couldn’t be more grateful to share this moment with the people who’ve walked beside them, supported them, and witnessed their story unfold.
