On Valentine’s day in 2014, Greg was visiting Winnipeg during his university reading week when he met Ruth at a Friday dance night of the Manitoba International Folk Dance Association.

One thing led to another, and Ruth proposed to Greg in April 2024. Accompanied by cinnamon buns and chai, she gave him an illustrated book of the Log Driver’s Waltz by Wade Hemsworth. A proposal was taped to the page with the lyrics “I think I will marry my log driver."
