What should I wear?
You are free to wear whatever you want, as long as it is not sweatpants!
For women, if you are interested in wearing traditional Indian clothing, contact Anna who can give you more information about the types of clothing and the link to purchasing traditional clothing.
For men, most men will be wearing the standard American suits.
***The only color you CANNOT wear is RED since red is reserved exclusively for the bride's attire at the ceremony.***
Do I have to attend both events?
No! You can either come to Jaggo (which is basically a pre-wedding party) or ceremony day (which will be held at the Gurudwara) followed by the reception.
What do I need to know before entering the Gurudwara (Temple)?
The morning of the 25th of October, please no vaping, smoking, and drinking before arriving to the Temple. Also, if you need to eat breakfast in the morning, please refrain from eating meat until after the ceremony.
When entering Temple, EVERYONE must remove their shoes and WASH their hands. EVERYONE must have their head covered (men and women). Head coverings will be provided. While shoes are NOT allowed, you are more than welcome to wear socks. Please be respectful of our culture. Thank you!
Please know that you do not have to attend the ceremony portion of the wedding. Instead, you are more than welcome to just come to the reception!
What happens at the Gurudwara (Temple)?
This ceremony will be 2 hours long. The first hour will be the religious ceremony and the second hour will be sitting and drinking chai (Indian tea) and eating Indian fried vegetables (pakora). This is tradition in Sikh culture. This event will start at 10 am and last until 12 pm.
Where do I sit in the Gurudwara (Sikh Temple)?
There is a women and men side of the temple. You will know when you walk in. You may sit wherever except the very front on each side, which is saved for the immediate family. Traditionally, seating is on the floor with cushions. However, there is bench seating in the back for the people who want it. There are two entrances accessible by car. The ceremony will be taking place on the upper level. So, those who are unable to use stairs should enter the temple at the upper floor entrance, not the lower level entrance.
What is Jaggo?
Jaggo is a lively pre-wedding party for Punjabi and Sikh wedding ceremonies. The literal meaning of Jaggo is "wake up". Traditionally it is a vibrant celebration where the bride's and groom's family sing and dance to announce and invite the "community" to the wedding.
Hungry?
There will be a mix of Indian food and American food both at Jaggo and the reception after the ceremony. The food served at the Gurudwara (Temple) will exclusively be Indian food.
