Picture this... 2015, Curry High School Gymnasium Today was the day the Junior Class were taking their ACT test. That meant everyone gets away with whatever they wanted to do, as long as they dont disturb the ones taking tests. Naturally, most students flooded to the gym to play basketball, walk in circles around the court, play volleyball or sit on the bleachers and watch. A friend and I decided to pass a volleyball back and forth with each other. I hit it a little too hard. The ball went soaring across the gym and hit someone in the face. That someone was a stranger at the time, but that didn’t last long. I apologized and asked for my ball back. Shortly after that, Hayden approached me in the line to buy snacks. He tugged on my hair and when I turned around, asked me if I was the one that hit him with the volleyball. The rest is history. 😊💗 I (Haley) was one of the few who decided to pick up a volleyball and pass it back and forth with a friend. We got really into it and I hit the ball a little harder than I meant to... in translation, the ball went flying across the gym and hit another student in the face. I was MORTIFIED. It didnt hit just any student, it hit Hayden. Right in the face... Hayden was playing basketball on the opposite side of the gym. We had never met before. In this moment, all I knew was that he was an upperclassman and I needed to get my ball back. I walked up to him, avoided eye contact, and asked for my ball back. He gave it back to me and we went back to playing with the volleyball. I thought the interaction was over and Id never have to face him again... BOY was I wrong. Later that day I was in the break food line and felt someone lightly tug on the back of my hair. I assumed it was one of my friends. I turned around to greet them, and there he was. Hayden was right behind me, standing almost a foot taller than me, grinning down at me. He said, Are you the girl who hit me with that volleyball? I responded, Yeah, Im sorry about that. The rest is history.

How We Met...

Hayden and I dated off and on throughout high school. We went our separate ways many times. However it never failed, we found our way back to each other. This time around we had been dating for nearly five years. During these five years, our favorite thing to do together was to go to what we call, “The Look Out. Its a place, a mile or two down a dirt road in the Double Springs, AL area. There is a rock at the top of a mountain that you can stand on and look out over the Bankhead Wilderness, Smith Lake and the breathtaking night sky. We have spent countless hours laying on this very rock, just looking at the stars. Hayden I recently bought our first home. One day while I was tidying in the kitchen Hayden mentioned he would like to go to The Look Out that upcoming Saturday night. I immediately knew he was up to something and I had a very good guess on what it was. I counted down the hours until we went. Every single day, I would ask if we were still going. I was SO excited! The day finally came, we waited on the sun to start setting and got ready to head out. On the way out the door I felt of Haydens pockets and said, do you have everything you need? with a smirk on my face. He assured me he had everything he needed. At this point I was slightly disappointed, I didnt feel or see a ring box in his pockets. I had convinced myself this wasnt the time and he wasnt going to do it. We finally arrived at The Look Out (aka a speck in the woods on a map). We got there right as the sun finished setting. We were talking about how pretty the sky was and how excited we were to eat dinner at our house with our friends that night (we were also celebrating a friends birthday that night). Things got quiet and we both stood to take in the beauty of the area. Hayden was standing a little behind me and said, If I dont hurry up and do this I am either going to back out or pass out so I need you to turn and look at me. I completely froze. He grabbed ahold of my hand and turned me around and there he was on one knee. I was ESTATIC! We both cried and cried. Dont let him lie to you, he cried just as hard as I did!! We hugged and had our moment and I picked up my phone to FaceTime my mother. She answered and was in the vehicle with my father. Her first words, whats wrong, why are you crying? You girls have got to quit calling me in tears! (We call her crying quite often and she always assumes the worst has happened. Hahahah sorry mom!) I showed her the ring on my finger and she began crying as well. It was a very sweet and special night that none of us will ever forget.
