Nick graduated from Texas Tech University in 2017 and moved back to DFW to work at a Landscape Architecture firm in Dallas. Haley graduated from the University of Georgia in 2018 and was looking for a job in Dallas when she happened to call the firm where Nick was working.

It was 5 pm EST and Haley decided to call since it was still working hours in Dallas. Nick answered and patiently waited as Haley explained who she was and why she was calling, knowing all the while he'd have to transfer her to his supervisor and she'd have to repeat everything she just said.

"I was nervous because I wanted so badly to move to Dallas. I could tell my voice was shaking when I talked." -Haley

"I was so busy but I answered, listened to her spiel, and said, 'uhh, let me transfer you real quick.' "

Haley got an interview and was flown out to Dallas where the team took her to Javier's in Uptown, iykyk. Nick ended up sitting on the side with her deaf ear so they didn't talk at all during dinner.

"I thought he was as cute as could be but men were not on my radar. I was just graduated and ready to start my career!" -Haley

"I was wondering the whole time why she wouldn't answer anything during dinner...turns out she's half deaf!" - Nick

Haley got the job, booked flights for her and Scarlett and they moved to Texas, where she didn't know anyone and had never even been, other than for the interview.

Meanwhile, Nick was working and enjoying life as a 20-something in DFW, going home often to visit his parents and brother. He too was focusing on his career and had decided the right girl would come along when it was time.

Haley got to Texas and loved it. She adored her new state and explored every chance she got doing things like going to the Dallas Farmer's Market, walking the Katy Trail, and enjoying White Rock Lake every weekend, Scarlett right there with her.

Haley and Nick became fast friends, finding their empathetic natures, kind personalities, and love of college football things they had in common.

In June 2019, a tornado came through Dallas, knocking the power out from their work and Haley's apartment. After a disastrous day trying to work while taking shelter at SMU, Haley got a parking ticket (though it really wasn't her fault) and everything that could go wrong, went wrong.

Nick still had power and internet at his apartment and being the kind human he is, and knowing we had deadlines that were not going to be given any grace, he offered to let Haley come over and work there with him the next day since she was straight up not having a good time.

Haley gratefully accepted. Nick sat at his desk, Haley sat on the couch with a laptop tray and they got to work.

Something must've been in the air that day because they got their work done, but they both had the best day ever.

Haley called her mom on her way home and said, 'Mama, I'm going to marry that man one day."

From that day forward, they (with Scarlett in the middle of them) were inseparable.
