story: Harley & Miranda Boyer (then Monroe) worked together at Cindy's Health & Vitality Center in Niles, Ohio. Harley had been going to kettlebell classes at the gym in the same plaza as their job for a couple of months and Miranda mentioned that she & her boyfriend (now husband) Nick Boyer (Tom's brother) would like to join. Nick & Miranda came to the gym for a few weeks and everyone was enjoying watching Nick nearly throw up every class (well, maybe not Nick) and Harley was completely unassuming of the actual situation... When the next class came, guess who walks in with Nick & Miranda: Tom! Turns out, Miranda had been planning this all along and loves to tell a story about how she was complaining about her boyfriend's brother who was very particular about the way peanut butter was spread in the container after someone was done using it and Harley said that she could see how this could be a reasonable thing to be upset about. Back at the gym, knowing it was a set up, Harley had to spend the whole class having Tom check her out (awkwaaaard)... After class, Nick & Miranda invited Harley & Tom out to sushi and since they both were hungry, they agreed. Tom ordered a large heart shaped sushi and tried to impress Harley by picking up his water glass with chopsticks and spilling it all over the floor! Nevertheless, Harley did think Tom was cute and worth getting to know...
update: Nick & Miranda never came back to kettlebell...it was all part of the set up!

story: Harley & Tom wanted to go on vacation during the summer, but could not decide where to go (Tom hates the beach and Harley wanted to be in the woods), so naturally driving 13 hours each way and camping was the best option. Neither of us had gone camping in years, so we spent a very long time researching the best tents/coolers/food/etc and booked a trip to Maine. We woke up after our first night in the tent and went directly to the camp store to buy a blanket because the ground was freezing and we did not sleep very well. Secondly, we drove into the park and decided that since we had never hiked before, we should start on the biggest mountain and longest trail to get to the top! We spent over four hours hiking up Cadillac Mountain through trees, granite rocks and confusing to follow trail lines. Multiple times we thought we would be stranded and have to live on the mountain. After helping a stranger with an allergy attack (Nurse Tom of course brought a first aid kit), it seemed like we had finally made it to the top. The views from the top of this mountain were breathtaking: trees, mountains, a lake, the Atlantic Ocean, porcupine islands off the coast... Tom wandered off to a spot where there were no people and called for Harley to come over & set up the camera to video to capture us on the mountain! (Tom argued that he didn’t want a stranger to take the photo, so that’s why it was a video). We proceeded to smile and dance around for the camera when Harley looks away and when she turns around, Tom is on his knee! He said one million cute things (none of which Harley remembers because she was in shock) and asked her to marry him. It was an overwhelming moment of joy & beauty & excitement. We spent the rest of the trip climbing more mountains we were not prepared for (google beehive trail) and Harley wore that ring the whole time (there may be some dings in the back from holding onto iron rails for her life). Fast forward two years later and we have FINALLY made wedding plans.
