Things to do?!
Hayley's idea: Hang out with us and don't forget your dancing shoes!
Nick's Idea: Dance your pants off! (I have a harmonica you can borrow)
In case you need ACTUAL answers:
The Black Hills in South Dakota are known for a variety of reasons! They are in close driving distance to Badlands National Park, Wall Drug, Rapid City, Spearfish, and Deadwood.
If you want to do tourist things - you can visit Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Wind Cave National Park, Custer State Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, and any of the many fun random things to do like mini golf, Old MacDonalds Farm, and see real life bears at Bear Country.
If you want to do outdoorsy things -you can go hiking or do a variety of outdoor activities, including renting boats at lakes nearby or staying at any of the many campgrounds in the Black Hills.
If you are planning on camping while you are here, the closest campgrounds are in or near Custer State Park!
Go to Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park! There are many hikes around Sylvan Lake (this trailhead is about a mile past Sylvan Lake once you enter the park)
It is a 3 mile round-trip hike! It is 1.5 up and 1.5 back! It is a moderate hike and some climbing up some rocks (but not the kind of rock climbing where you need a harness). You get a GREAT view of the Needles/Cathedral Spires!
Mount Rushmore is in Keystone! You can get there quite easily from camp by car. They have Thomas Jefferson's recipe for ice cream!
The Badlands will be a bit of a drive from Outlaw but it is totally worth it! It's about 1.5/2 hours away by car (either through Rapid or through Custer State Park) and has great hikes & fun wildlife! It is quite diverse but they are known for these formations! (The badlands were once under water / part of the ocean quite a few million years ago!)
Sunday Gulch is another hike that starts from Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park. Sunday Gulch is one of my favorite hikes but I have learned that I only like doing one part of it! It's super fun to walk down the waterfalls and walk among the rocks! Everything else makes me wish I was doing literally anything else but still hiking on that trail. I would totally recommend this hike (and ask someone which side the waterfalls are on so you can start there!) WARNING - if you do this - you'll have to walk back up the waterfalls! Would recommend Chacos or shoes that still work/grip while wet.
Crazy Horse is amazing and very well-known by South Dakotans but not so much for those living out of state! (You'll also very likely pass it if you are coming to Outlaw through Rapid City!) It is fully donation funded and Native American-run memorial for Crazy Horse and the monument has been actively being worked on for over 70 years! You can go see where the construction is at now (Crazy Horse now has a finger!) and the entirety of Mount Rushmore fits in Crazy Horse's head/hair.
