I honestly don't believe either one of us believed we would find our forever on a silly app, and yet, here we are. We've both experienced our share of heartbreak when it comes to former relationships. So, when we were both convinced by friends to create dating profiles, I think it's safe to say, we were both extremely skeptical. I know for myself, I never thought it would happen, and if you asked Joel, he'd say the same. But before I knew it, I had a notification that would change everything, and to his surprise, he got one in return. In the words of Joel, he wasn't expecting anything, he just liked the fact that I owned a One Tree Hill jersey (thanks Mimi!). That's how it started. A simple comment on the picture of me in that One Tree Hill jersey. Of course, my mother raised me with manners, and I had to simply say "thank you!". From there, everything changed. We talked every day, until one day I stopped receiving notifications, which I chalked up to his lack of interest, but I was wrong. When the notifications finally came through, I had several, my phone had stopped notifying me, and the last message was, "It was nice talking to you, and I hope you find what you're looking for." After a small panic attack, I messaged back as fast as I could, frantically apologizing and telling him what had happened. To my surprise, he came back with, "Whenever you're ready to give me your number, I'm ready to give you mine." I couldn't believe it, after thinking I had ghosted him, his response was not at all what I expected it to be. From there, we continued talking every day. Telling each other our stories, asking about how we grew up, what we wanted in a relationship, and even the hard conversations that tend to be avoided. Finally, on October 28th, 2023, we had our first date. Who knew Chuys and Main Event could make for the best night?! On the way from dinner to Main Event, I texted a dear friend and told her, "I'm 99% positive I'm marrying him!" Little did I know how true those words would be. Before we both knew it, the night ended, much to our dismay. Later that night, we decided we wanted to make this relationship work, despite the distance. He found a quaint little town, that is exactly a hour from both of us, and he said, "I'll drive a hour for dinner with you, if you want to do the same." And, it was truly an easy yes. Carrollton, KY quickly became a favorite spot, and on May 6th, it became the very best spot. Monday, May 6th, was just like any other day. Mondays are "Carrollton days", meaning after work, we meet for dinner in Carrollton. So, that was the plan. My sister was in town for my mom's graduation, that had happened that weekend, and there was a part of me that was a little sad to be spending her last night in town in Carrollton, but she was adamant that I go. So, I went. We met earlier than we normally do, and we decided to meet at our spot by the river to play games before grabbing dinner (I did find this odd, but tried not to read too much into it.). Once we both got there, we decided to play Bananagrams (Scrabble, without the board). I was on a role, having the best game, the letters I was drawing continued to add to the perfect board, when Joel simply stated, "I can't get my words to connect", to which I responded, "that's unfortunate". What can I say, I'm competitive and I was on a roll! He then proceeded to say it again, to which I responded "Ok". He then asked me, "Can you help me try and get them connected?" What I didn't expect was that when I looked up I'd see the words, "Will you marry me?" After a couple no's (I was in shock!), he said the most beautiful things, and he asked me again, and that time I said "Yes!" Looking back on the events that led to our relationship, I sometimes can't believe it, but then I'm reminded that this all came together in God's timing and our story is beautiful and just as God wrote it. Who knew a silly app would lead to this?! It's silly and cliche to say, but it truly is, all because two people swiped right. Oh, and a One Tree Hill jersey!
