The Greek Revival-style estate was completed in 1870 by the Honorable J.D. Giddings, who built the home on Brenham's highest hill in an effort to protect his family from illness. This protective, nurturing intent can still be observed in the home; not just in the architecture itself, but in the great efforts of restoration and preservation undertaken by the Heritage Society of Washington County. Upon first visiting this regal structure, we were struck by the intimacy that underlies the mansion's grandeur. The transoms and breezeways confess a father's love, and the limestone thresholds time-worn by countless guests chronicle a community's heirloom. To us, this was the true spectacle: a solid foundation of love.
