Important info for Internationals
Airport and Visas
Do I need a visa to enter Australia?
Yes if you are American, you need an ETA (Electronic Transport authority) for under a 3 month long visit.
Regardless of where you're from, check what documentation you need here. (https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-finder/visit)
This will need to be associated to your current passport number.
How to beat the jet lag?
You'll land in the morning and customs are very easy at Sydney Airport. Our best recommendation is to try to stay awake during the day and plan perhaps a walk around Circular Quay (pronounced "key") where the opera house and Harbour bridge. You can even catch a ferry from here using your Opal card you used on the train
What airport should I fly into?
Sydney International Airport
Public Transport FYI's
How do I use public transport when I get to the airport?
The easiest way to get to where you're staying when you land in Sydney is via train from the airport. The trains are on lower levels and you can buy an Opal Card and top it up before going onto the platform. If you're navigating, google maps is recommended in the city especially set to walking or public transport directions. If you have any other questions please reach out!
Wedding Specifics
How much time will I actually get with the Bride and Groom if i travel out to Australia?
Fair question! If you are hoping to spend lots of meaningful time with the Bride and Groom, we absolutely understand if you'd prefer to come visit us sometime after 2025. We have set out events during the week before the wedding and the week after that visitors are welcome to attend!
Australian Culture Surprises
Is Australian coffee really "better" than American coffee?
Yes. But also much stronger and different! So when you're out here, order anything as a half strength. A large means an EXTRA shot of espresso!
Cars and Driving in Aus
Do I need to have an international license in order to drive in Australia or rent a car?
Australia is vast and there is much you can see and do by car. If you are renting a car in Oz, there is some stuff you need to know! Driving in Australia is an experience that should be savoured. It is a fantastic way to experience some great places and wide open spaces and fantastic natural scenery. There are many destinations that can only be experienced by car.
You will need a valid driver’s license and a credit card or debit card to hire your car.
Do I have to rent a car?
No you don't. Technically if you want to use public transport the entire time plus uber/taxi from train stations, you can do so.
If I wanted to rent a car, what is the recommendation on where or when I do so?
Renting a car is a great option if you want to see some of the best parts of Australia. For some of you, it might be driving on the opposite side of the road so please familiarise yourself with driving laws in NSW (especially about round abouts). You will need a toll tag and insurance. If you have an international credit card that you can use, look up to see if you have coverage associated with using your card while you travel. We recommend renting a car near our home location at the train station in Campbelltown. Please look at the travel section to see what we recommend.
