Our story began in August 2020 when we were introduced at a lunch with our families. We were a bit shy and nervous, so we didn’t speak much during the meal. However, afterward, we took a chance and exchanged phone numbers. We texted and talked on the phone as much as we could, with Makayla in Miami for college and Houston working the night shift.
Every other weekend, Makayla would drive home from Miami just so we could go out on a date and spend as much time together as possible. Even though it always seemed to storm whenever they got together, we always found something to do and never canceled our plans. On our second date, we visited the Sanford Zoo, and within 20 minutes of walking around, the clouds rolled in and it started pouring on us. We ran for cover and started laughing because you have to love Florida weather. Suddenly, it stopped raining. We looked at one another & knew raining or not we were going to enjoy every moment that we could with one another.
After a few weeks of going out and having many long phone conversations, Houston took a chance and asked Makayla to be in an official committed relationship. Since then, our love for one another has only grown. Along the way, we have always found new ways to surprise each other and make each other smile. One way Houston likes to make Makayla smile is by surprising her with delicious cooking and baking. It was actually Houston's baking skills that made Makayla fall in love with him on our first date when Houston made Makayla his famous upside-down pineapple cake. Since then, Makayla has been asking for the recipe, but Houston told Makayla he would only share it after they got married.
We have created many special memories together, from visiting theme parks to enjoying fancy dinners and embarking on random adventures throughout Florida, Virginia, and Colorado. We always kept an open mind about each other's choices, and by the end of the day, we were often surprised at how much fun we had. When we're together, we realize that no matter where we are or what we're doing, being with each other always makes things better.
After four years together, Houston organized a trip with Makayla's twin sister, Marquee, to Colorado for a short vacation that had a big surprise. On Friday, May 24th, 2024, Houston planned a hike to Sky Pond. After a three-hour hike, they reached a stunning opening with the best view of the snow-capped mountains towering over a frozen lake. Houston knew this was the perfect spot. He walked Makayla a little further out onto the frozen lake, and after a few moments, he dropped to one knee and asked Makayla if she would marry him. Obviously, Makayla said yes! Since that moment, they have been looking forward to our next big journey in life together and all the wonderful memories that are soon to come.
On May 23rd, 2026, Houston and Makayla will be getting married, surrounded by friends and family. With all the love and support they give and receive, they will spend the rest of their lives together, loving each other, creating new memories, laughing, and supporting one another. They aim to uplift each other and become the best versions of themselves. We can't wait to celebrate this joyous occasion! And Makayla is especially excited to finally discover the secret ingredient!
