<p>Ilona and Andrew met while working together at SDC, shortly after Ilona relocated to Phoenix for a new job and a new chapter. There was an immediate mutual interest, though it took a little time—and one very ambitious hike—for things to truly begin.Andrew made the first move by inviting Ilona on a hike. Ilona eagerly said yes without doing any research, unknowingly signing up for an 11.5-mile trek with 4,200 feet of elevation gain. She survived the adventure (and wasn’t scared off), proving early on that she was ready for whatever lay ahead. If you’d like to hear more about how that day could have ended horribly, you’ll just have to ask them.Though their friend Ian insists it was his birthday weekend that officially started their relationship, Ilona and Andrew both knew before then where things were going. Over the past six-plus years, they’ve shared far more ups than downs—changing jobs, moving in together, surviving COVID shortly thereafter, climbing (a lot), traveling, meeting each other’s families, caring for two beloved cats, and building a life filled with adventure, laughter, and fun.In December 2025, Andrew proposed to Ilona in a hole in a rock at the top of a climb overlooking Cochise Stronghold—one of their favorite places to climb and camp, and one of the first places they experienced together. There were plenty of signs the proposal was coming, but the dead giveaway was Andrew insisting on carrying the daypack himself.Today, they cherish slow mornings with hot coffee or tea, NYTimes Games or a good book, and letting their cats, Bodhi and Kubo, explore the backyard for the millionth time. Their relationship is adventurous, lighthearted, committed, and deeply caring—and they’re excited to keep walking their paths together, making new memories, and cherishing the little things that make them them.</p>
