Our Wedding

Steven and I met one summer while he was working at a Terrain at Styers, where my brother happened to work. As their friendship grew, Steven would become a familiar face around our home after they would return from jaunts through local botanical gardens where they would test each other's knowledge of plant names. As the years went by, I ended up working at the same nursery in the same department. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but our interests in music, film, and horticulture rapidly began to align and after many late nights spent texting, I eventually asked him out on a date after our shifts ended one chilly November afternoon. We agreed on spending time at a Natural Lands Preserve with abandoned railroad tracks cutting through a winding creek below. I could feel he wanted to kiss me as our legs dangled freely from the rustic trestle and our eyes pointed towards a Green Ash tree (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) swaying above, but that would not come until he dropped me off. After four years of living through the Pandemic and maintaining a long distance relationship while we were acquiring our Horticulture degrees at separate universities, we would finally settle into a restored 1850’s Train Station with our eight week old tuxedo kitten who would become an extension of ourselves. A train station that presides several miles North of the tracks where we nearly shared our first kiss. The same tracks where he would get down on one knee and ask to share the rest of our lives together. Our entire journey can be seen in flashbacks of being knelt down on the forest floor inspecting mushrooms with a hand lens, craning our necks to measure the tips of State Champion Trees, and holding one another in the presence of endless sunsets.
