Welcome to Palmas 🌞

photo

Born in 1989, Palmas is Brazil’s youngest capital. It is planned, spacious, and surrounded by nature. The city stretches between the Lajeado Ridge and the Tocantins River, with a huge manmade lake (Lago de Palmas) running along its edge. Palmas sits right in the middle of the Cerrado, Brazil’s "tropical savanna" which includes lots of dry trees, golden grass, wildflowers, and big open skies.

And then there’s the sun. It shines pretty much every single day, and it doesn’t play around. (This is your official warning to pack sunscreen).

Palmas is not exactly a walking city. You’ll find charm in the quiet pace, friendly people, and the way sunsets seem to last forever. Think more “find a spot and settle in” than “let’s explore on foot.”

Palmas offers access to natural escapes like the nearby village of Taquaruçu, known for its waterfalls and forest trails.

July also happens to be the perfect time of year to visit Jalapão, one of Brazil’s most breathtaking natural regions.

⚠️ VISA TO BRAZIL – ATTENTION

Please check visa and entry requirements for Brazil based on your nationality, as these can vary and may change.

As of April 10, 2025, Brazil reinstated visa requirements for travellers from the US and Australia.

Visas are not available on arrival at the airport and must be obtained in advance by applying for an eVisa online. We recommend applying well ahead of travel, as processing times can vary.

Getting Around

Palmas is a city where having a car can be convenient, as the city is spread out and not at walking distances.

Uber is a reliable choice for getting around the city. You can also grab a Taxi where available or rent a car.

Uber: Uber is the best option for getting around. Fares are generally affordable, with short trips within the city center typically costing between $1.25 and $2.65 USD.

Taxi: Traditional taxis are also available throughout Palmas. Some reputable taxi services in Palmas include Táxi Palmas JK 24 Horas and Coopertáxi.

Public Transport: Technically, Palmas has a bus system... but it’s not something most people actually use. If you’re visiting, we recommend sticking with Uber, taxis, or renting a car.

Safety Tips

Palmas is a relaxed and peaceful place. People are friendly and you are unlikely to run into trouble here. Still, like anywhere in Brazil, it is good to stay aware. Stick to busy areas, try not to walk around alone at night, keep your phone tucked away when walking and avoid leaving it or valuables out on tables. In your hotel, it is a good idea to use a lock or safe to keep things secure, just to be on the safe side.

For other parts of Brazil, it is best not to flash jewelry, designer bags, or big cameras. Avoid walking with your phone out or leaving it on tables. Use rideshares like Uber instead of taxis and stick to busy, well-lit areas at night. Carry a copy of your passport and keep the original safe.

Enjoy yourself, stay alert, and travel light so you can soak in all the magic without stress.
