A Brief History of The Foundry
The Foundry Golf Club sits on historic land in Powhatan, Virginia, shaped by centuries of cultural and entrepreneurial development. Originally inhabited by the Monacan Indians—part of the Sioux nation—the area was valued for its fertile soil and proximity to the James River. In the early 1700s, French Huguenots fleeing religious persecution in France established settlements in the region, including along Fine Creek.
By the 1800s, a group of investors attempted to turn a former mill on the property into a government-contracted arms factory making canons and canon balls for the Civil War. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee spent his final night as a general nearby, camping on the property after surrendering at Appomattox.
Artist Julien Binford purchased the ruins in 1935 and began restoring the site, drawing creative inspiration from its people and landscape. His efforts preserved its legacy and laid the groundwork for the property's transformation.
In the late 1980s, a group of Richmond businessmen led by civil engineer J.K. Timmons acquired the land and founded The Foundry Golf Club. With golf architect R.F. Loving, Jr., they designed a course that honored both the natural terrain and traditional golf aesthetics. Today, The Foundry stands as a unique blend of Virginian history, artistry, and sport.
