What do I wear to the Anand Karaj(wedding day)?

Sikh wedding ceremonies are beautiful and spiritual, and here’s a little guide to help you feel comfortable and prepared:

Dress Modestly: Out of respect for the sacred space, we kindly ask everyone to dress modestly. This means no shorts, sleeveless tops, or clothing that’s revealing.

Bright and Festive Attire: Sikh weddings are vibrant and joyful! Feel free to wear colorful, traditional attire like suits. If you prefer Western wear, opt for something formal and elegant.

Head Covering: It’s customary to cover your head inside the Gurudwara(temple). For men, a handkerchief will be given, and for women, a dupatta (scarf) or shawl is ideal. Don’t worry if you don’t have one—there will be head coverings available at the temple for all.

Shoes Off: Shoes are removed before entering the main prayer hall, so plan your footwear accordingly for easy on and off.

What do I wear to the reception? (evening dinner and dance)

Attending a Sikh wedding reception is a wonderful opportunity to embrace vibrant and traditional attire. Here are some recommendations for both men and women:

For Women:

Salwar Kameez: This traditional ensemble consists of a long tunic paired with trousers and a matching dupatta (scarf). It's both elegant and comfortable, making it a popular choice for such occasions.

Lehenga: A lehenga is a long, embroidered skirt paired with a fitted blouse (choli) and a dupatta. This outfit is festive and suitable for wedding receptions.

Anarkali Suit: Featuring a long, frock-style top and slim-fit bottoms, the Anarkali suit offers a graceful and traditional look.

Sari

For Men:

Gifts?

It is not customary for guests to bring gifts for the bride or groom at a Sikh wedding. Instead, there is a ceremony called 'Sagaan,' which takes place at the end of the religious ceremony, during which most guests give money to the wedded couple. Typically, the amount ranges from $20 to $50 for both the bride and groom. We do not have a gift registry, and gifts are not a part of our wedding tradition, so your presence is truly the best gift we could ask for!
