Location: Situated on the Niagara River, which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario. It is approximately 17 miles (27 km) northwest of Buffalo, New York, and 43 miles (69 km) southeast of Toronto, Ontario.

Composition: The largest and most powerful of the three is the Horseshoe Falls, which straddles the international border and carries about 90 percent of the water volume. The American Falls and the smaller Bridal Veil Falls lie entirely within the United States, separated from Horseshoe Falls by Goat Island.

Flow Rate: While not the tallest waterfall in the world, Niagara Falls has the highest flow rate of any waterfall in North America with a significant vertical drop. During peak daytime hours, over 6 million cubic feet (168,000 cubic meters) of water go over the crest of the falls every minute.

Formation: The falls were formed about 12,000 years ago by glacial activity during the last ice age, and erosion has caused the falls to move approximately 7 miles (11 km) south from their original location near present-day Lewiston and Queenston.
